KINGSTON, Jamaica, August 18, 2026: Keemo Paul produced one of the most complete performances of the Caribbean Premier League 2026 so far, smashing 65 from 36 balls before taking 3 for 30 as Jamaica Kingsmen overwhelmed St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 51 runs at a roaring Sabina Park.

Jamaica’s victory looked highly unlikely during the first eight overs.

Kirk McKenzie and Keacy Carty were both dismissed without scoring inside the opening five deliveries. Usman Khan followed for 13, Reeza Hendricks made 19, and the Kingsmen were reduced to 54 for four after 7.2 overs.

Then captain Rovman Powell and Paul changed the entire shape of the match.

The pair added 99 runs for the fifth wicket, with Powell contributing a controlled 49 from 39 balls and Paul transforming the innings through a fearless 65 from only 36 deliveries. Jamaica recovered to 181 for six from their 20 overs.

The Patriots never came close.

They slipped to 31 for three, 64 for five and eventually 130 all out in exactly 18 overs as Paul’s three wickets were backed by Andre Russell’s superb 2 for 19, Hunain Shah’s accurate pace and Hassan Khan’s control through the middle overs.

The victory gave Jamaica consecutive wins after beginning the tournament with three straight defeats and sent the Sabina Park crowd home with something very different from the frustration that defined the opening week.

Jamaica Lose Two Wickets Before They Score a Run

The Patriots could hardly have asked for a better start after Jason Holder won the toss and chose to bowl.

Saurabh Netravalkar struck almost immediately.

McKenzie was bowled from the second ball of the innings after Jamaica unsuccessfully reviewed the dismissal. Three deliveries later, Carty edged behind without scoring.

Jamaica were 0 for two after five balls.

That opening was particularly significant because batting collapses had already damaged the Kingsmen repeatedly during the tournament.

They were bowled out for just 117 when Mohammad Nabi and Guyana Amazon Warriors handed Jamaica their third consecutive defeat earlier in the home leg.

Another collapse appeared possible here.

Hasaranga Keeps the Pressure on Jamaica

Reeza Hendricks tried to restore momentum and struck a four and a six during his 19 from 14 deliveries.

Usman Khan struggled to settle at the other end.

Wanindu Hasaranga trapped Usman lbw for 13 at 36 for three. Jamaica reviewed the decision, but the original call survived.

Hasaranga then removed Hendricks, caught behind by Andre Fletcher, to leave the Kingsmen 54 for four after 7.2 overs.

The home side had lost four recognized batters and still had more than 12 overs to negotiate.

What followed became the decisive phase of the evening.

Powell and Paul Rebuild Without Allowing the Game to Drift

Powell arrived needing to balance two competing demands.

Jamaica could not afford another wicket.

They also could not spend six overs simply rebuilding and leave themselves defending 140.

The captain managed that tension well.

Paul gave him the ideal partner.

At the strategic timeout Jamaica were 75 for four after 10 overs. Powell had 20 and Paul 12.

They were still behind the game.

The difference was that neither looked trapped by it.

Keemo Paul Gets to 15 and Changes Gear

Paul explained afterward that he did not find the conditions particularly easy when he first arrived.

His approach was therefore unusually measured for a player capable of immediate power.

He absorbed a few deliveries, reached 15 and then felt he had properly understood the surface.

From there, the innings changed quickly.

Paul began using the sweep and reverse sweep, attacking areas the Patriots had assumed were protected by their spin options.

His confidence came directly from the role Jamaica’s coaching staff had given him.

The instruction was clear: if the top order fell into trouble, Paul could be promoted and trusted to attack rather than merely survive.

He reached his fifty from 30 balls with three fours and four sixes.

The hundred partnership did not quite arrive, but it barely mattered.

Paul and Powell added 99 for the fifth wicket.

Paul’s 65 Gives Jamaica the Innings They Needed

Paul eventually fell for 65 from 36 balls, caught by Kevin Wickham off Holder with Jamaica on 153 for five after 17.3 overs.

His innings included five fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 180.55.

The numbers matter because of where he started.

This was not a powerplay assault with fielding restrictions and a new ball.

Paul entered at 54 for four, against a bowling attack containing Holder, Hasaranga, Obed McCoy, Netravalkar and Kyle Mayers.

He converted a rescue job into a match-winning innings.

It continued an encouraging tournament for Paul, who had already taken three wickets in Jamaica’s dramatic opening-night defeat against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

This time, his contribution came with a victory attached.

Powell Misses Fifty but Plays the Captain’s Innings

Powell finished one run short of his half-century, making 49 from 39 balls with four fours and three sixes.

Obed McCoy dismissed him in the 19th over, taking a return catch with Jamaica on 167 for six.

The captain’s innings lacked the explosive strike rate of Paul’s assault, but it was arguably just as important structurally.

Powell gave Paul the freedom to attack because someone remained committed to batting deep.

That balance has become an important personal project for the Jamaica captain.

After the match, Powell spoke about trying to control his natural aggression enough to turn useful forties into longer innings while still maintaining the ability to finish matches.

The 49 did not complete that objective.

It did help win this game.

Russell Makes Sure Jamaica Reach 181

Andre Russell then provided the late acceleration Jamaica needed.

He struck two sixes in an unbeaten seven-ball 14, while Hassan Khan added seven from four.

The Kingsmen finished on 181 for six.

Considering they had been 0 for two and 54 for four, 181 represented a significant recovery.

The total also showed how quickly Jamaica’s middle order had evolved since Russell’s spectacular 68 nearly rescued a 207-run chase against Barbados Tridents.

Earlier in the tournament, Jamaica’s power hitters had often been asked to repair hopeless positions individually.

Against the Patriots, Powell and Paul repaired the innings together.

McCoy and Holder Do Their Jobs, but Jamaica Escape Anyway

McCoy was the Patriots’ most economical specialist bowler, finishing with 1 for 27 from four overs.

Holder conceded only 30 from his four and took the crucial wicket of Paul.

Netravalkar claimed 2 for 43 after causing the opening-over chaos, while Hasaranga took 2 for 36.

The problem was not a complete failure of the Patriots’ bowling.

It was their inability to finish Jamaica after reducing them to 54 for four.

That became even more costly once the chase began.

The Patriots Need 182 but Lose Fletcher in the First Over

Andre Fletcher had been the Patriots’ batting anchor earlier in the tournament, including an unbeaten 48 when St Kitts and Nevis defeated St Lucia Kings for their first victory of CPL 2026.

He lasted four balls at Sabina Park.

Fletcher struck Hassan Khan for six but was caught by Russell from the final ball of the opening over.

Johnson Charles and Kyle Mayers followed soon afterward.

Hunain Shah removed Charles for 11 before Paul bowled Mayers for eight.

The Patriots were 31 for three after 4.2 overs.

Unlike Jamaica, they never found a partnership capable of reversing the damage.

Kevin Wickham Tries to Hold the Chase Together

Wickham became the Patriots’ most substantial batter.

He made 37 from 34 balls with one four and two sixes.

The difficulty was the required rate.

Jamaica had posted 181, and survival alone could not solve the chase.

Nikhil Chaudhary provided a brief burst with 18 from 13 balls before Vitel Lawes trapped him lbw.

The Patriots reviewed.

The decision remained out.

Dasun Shanaka was then run out for two.

At 64 for five after 8.4 overs, Jamaica had complete control.

Andre Russell Bowls Like a Specialist

Russell’s batting contribution lasted only seven balls.

His bowling mattered considerably more.

The experienced all-rounder delivered four overs for only 19 runs and took two wickets.

That economy rate of 4.75 was comfortably Jamaica’s best among the bowlers who completed more than two overs.

He removed Holder for one and later dismissed Wickham for 37, effectively ending the only innings that still offered the Patriots a remote path back into the contest.

Russell also delivered 11 dot balls.

On a surface where changes of pace were gripping, his ability to take pace off the ball made him far more difficult to attack than a conventional death bowler.

Hassan Khan and Hunain Shah Squeeze the Chase

Paul later explained that Jamaica had identified how much the surface was gripping.

The bowling plan followed from that observation.

Slower deliveries became useful through the middle overs.

At the death, Jamaica increasingly attacked wide of off stump and made the Patriots manufacture power across larger areas of the field.

Hassan Khan conceded only 22 from three overs and dismissed Fletcher.

Hunain Shah returned 1 for 16 from three overs and repeatedly found his yorker.

The combined effect meant the Patriots never established the uninterrupted boundary sequence required to chase 182.

Navin Bidaisee Retired Out as Patriots Search for Momentum

The degree of St Kitts and Nevis’ difficulty became clear when Navin Bidaisee was retired out after scoring 19 from 16 balls.

The tactical decision came at the end of the 14th over with the Patriots on 108.

They needed a drastic change in scoring rate.

It never arrived.

Holder fell for one in the next over.

Wickham followed at 121.

The chase had moved beyond recovery.

Keemo Paul Returns to Finish What He Started

Paul’s night could already have justified Player of the Match recognition through his batting.

He added three wickets anyway.

Mayers was his first victim.

Obed McCoy became the second when Hassan Khan completed the catch at 129 for nine.

Wanindu Hasaranga was the last.

From the final ball of the 18th over, Paul found a hint of inward seam movement as Hasaranga backed away looking for a boundary. Odean Smith held the catch.

Patriots 130 all out.

Jamaica by 51 runs.

Five Overs That Changed the Match

The most revealing numbers came between overs 11 and 16 of Jamaica’s innings.

At the halfway stage, the Kingsmen were only 75 for four.

They reached 100 in the 14th over.

Paul’s fifty arrived from 30 balls.

By 16.5 overs, Jamaica had reached 150.

The Kingsmen scored 75 runs between the 11th over and the end of the 17th, transforming a vulnerable innings into one capable of supporting their bowling attack.

That acceleration proved decisive because the pitch became progressively less comfortable for clean hitting once Jamaica began varying pace.

Powell’s Captaincy Gets Easier When Powell the Batter Contributes

Powell made an interesting point after the match.

Leadership becomes simpler when the captain is contributing personally.

The theory showed itself at Sabina Park.

His 49 gave Jamaica stability.

That allowed him to captain the defense from a position of confidence rather than asking his bowlers to rescue another inadequate total.

Powell also resisted the temptation to overcomplicate his bowling changes.

Russell completed four overs.

Paul completed four.

Hassan and Hunain were used to exploit the surface.

Only Odean Smith struggled, conceding 24 from his two overs.

Jamaica’s Bowling Attack Suddenly Looks Formidable

Paul described the strategy as attacking the stumps hard before using slower balls as the pitch began gripping.

That approach suited Jamaica’s personnel unusually well.

Russell can change pace without sacrificing intimidation.

Paul can bowl into the surface and attack the stumps.

Hunain brings yorkers.

Hassan provides spin and control.

Smith offers raw pace even though this was a difficult night for him.

It is a considerably more balanced bowling attack than Jamaica’s early results suggested.

The challenge is reproducing it away from Sabina Park.

Back-to-Back Wins Change Jamaica’s Tournament

Jamaica’s season began painfully.

They lost the opener from the final delivery against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

Barbados Tridents then survived Russell’s extraordinary hitting to win by five runs.

Guyana Amazon Warriors followed by bowling Jamaica out for 117.

Three matches.

Three defeats.

The campaign was already beginning to look unstable.

Powell’s side have now won twice in succession.

That matters psychologically as much as mathematically.

Earlier losses had shown that Jamaica possessed individual match-winners without consistently building complete team performances.

Match 10 was different.

Powell rebuilt.

Paul accelerated.

Russell finished the innings.

The bowlers shared wickets and pressure.

Jamaica finally looked like a side whose pieces were working together.

Patriots’ Batting Problems Return

For St Kitts and Nevis, the defeat revived concerns that were visible during their opening loss to Trinbago Knight Riders.

In that match, Sunil Narine and TKR reduced the Patriots to 109 for nine.

They responded strongly against St Lucia, but the Jamaica chase brought back the same fundamental problem.

Too many early wickets left too much responsibility on the middle order.

Fletcher, Charles and Mayers combined for only 26 runs.

Shanaka made two.

Holder one.

Wickham’s 37 became respectable rather than threatening because nobody stayed with him long enough to build the chase.

Holder Defends His Bowling Decisions

Holder acknowledged afterward that the Patriots still had spin overs available during Jamaica’s innings.

He chose instead to trust pace later in the innings because Russell and Romario Shepherd-type power hitters are often comfortable attacking spin once set.

Kyle Mayers was therefore given the final over and delivered a reasonable nine-run over.

The captain’s wider concern is consistency.

St Kitts and Nevis now head toward their home leg with combinations still being assessed and several areas requiring improvement.

The official Caribbean Premier League match center provides the updated CPL schedule and results, while squad and franchise information can be found through the official Jamaica Kingsmen team page and the CPL’s official team directory, including St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Sabina Park Finally Gets the Celebration Jamaica Wanted

There was another important element to the victory.

Jamaican CPL cricket had returned to the island after a long absence, and the home leg began with disappointment.

The supporters kept coming.

Paul described the noise after boundaries and wickets as electrifying.

Powell was equally appreciative, thanking the crowd for staying behind the team during a difficult beginning.

The Kingsmen therefore leave their home fixtures with something much more valuable than a respectable farewell.

They leave with momentum.

TSE Turning Points: Where Jamaica Won Match 10

1. Powell and Paul refuse to panic at 54 for four

The Kingsmen had already lost most of their top order. Another quick wicket could have reduced the innings to survival. Instead, the fifth-wicket pair added 99.

2. Paul attacks after reaching 15

His early patience allowed him to understand the surface before accelerating into a 36-ball 65.

3. Jamaica turn 75 for four into 181 for six

The second half of the innings produced 106 runs. That acceleration transformed the match.

4. Fletcher falls in the first over

The Patriots lost one of their most important top-order players before the chase could develop any rhythm.

5. Mayers becomes Paul’s first wicket

At 31 for three, St Kitts and Nevis were already chasing both runs and stability.

6. Shanaka’s run-out leaves the Patriots 64 for five

The middle order had no opportunity to establish a recovery partnership.

7. Russell removes Holder and Wickham

His 2 for 19 eliminated two batters capable of taking the game deeper.

8. Paul’s final wicket completes the all-round performance

Hasaranga’s dismissal gave Paul the third wicket of his spell and Jamaica a 51-run victory.

What Jamaica’s Win Means for CPL 2026

Two consecutive victories do not erase the first three defeats.

They change what comes next.

The Kingsmen now know they can recover from poor starts, defend competitive totals and win matches without requiring Russell to produce an extraordinary rescue act.

That is important in a tournament where Barbados Tridents have also begun strongly, including their second successive victory behind Sherfane Rutherford and Gudakesh Motie.

Jamaica’s next challenge is portability.

Powell acknowledged that every Caribbean venue asks different questions.

The slower balls and change-ups that worked at Sabina Park will not automatically produce the same results elsewhere.

The Kingsmen have finally discovered a winning combination.

Now they have to prove it travels.

TSE Verdict: Keemo Paul Turns Jamaica’s Crisis Into Momentum

There were two Jamaica innings inside the same 20 overs.

The first produced 54 for four and carried all the familiar signs of a team still searching for answers.

The second belonged to Powell and Paul.

They turned damage limitation into aggression without losing control of the match.

Paul was the difference.

His 65 changed the scoreboard. His bowling removed Mayers, McCoy and Hasaranga. His final wicket closed the game.

Russell’s spell deserves nearly as much credit, while Powell’s 49 provided the structural innings Jamaica badly needed.

For the Patriots, the defeat was less complicated.

They bowled Jamaica into trouble and allowed them to escape.

Then their own top order failed to provide the same recovery.

Jamaica began their home leg wondering where their first win would come from.

They leave Kingston with two in a row and a player in Keemo Paul who suddenly looks capable of changing games with either discipline.

CPL 2026: Barbados Tridents Win Two Straight Games to Take Top Spot

Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive 61 set up Barbados Tridents before Gudakesh Motie and Mujeeb Ur Rahman strangled St Lucia’s chase to secure a nine-run CPL 2026 victory.

Published

on

Sherfane Rutherford and Barbados Tridents celebrate their nine-run victory over St Lucia Kings in CPL 2026 Match 9 at Gros Islet.

Across his first two innings of CPL 2026, Sherfane Rutherford has scored 111 runs and produced back-to-back half-centuries.

The second one carried even more weight.

Rutherford struck 61 from 31 balls after Barbados Tridents had briefly lost control of their innings, helping them reach 177 for five before Gudakesh Motie and Mujeeb Ur Rahman squeezed St Lucia Kings out of a chase that remained alive deep into the night.

St Lucia finished on 168 for seven from their 18 overs at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on Sunday, August 16, leaving Barbados with a nine-run victory and two wins from two matches in the Caribbean Premier League 2026.

The scoreline tells part of the story. The more revealing number is 49.

Motie and Mujeeb conceded only 49 runs across their combined eight overs while taking five wickets. In a chase that began with a required rate close to 10 runs per over, those eight overs repeatedly forced St Lucia to rebuild just as they appeared ready to attack.

It was a victory built around Rutherford’s acceleration and the Tridents’ ability to take wickets at the right moments. Readers can follow the wider tournament through The Sports Encounter’s cricket coverage.

Rain Changes the Game, but De Kock Refuses to Slow Down

Rain delayed the start and eventually reduced the contest to 18 overs per side, giving both teams less time to settle.

Barbados lost Zachary Carter for two in the second over, but Quinton de Kock immediately changed the tempo.

The South African wicketkeeper attacked from the beginning, smashing 38 from only 15 deliveries with two fours and four sixes. His partnership with Brandon King added 56 and helped Barbados race through the shortened powerplay at 61 for one.

King provided the more measured half of the partnership. He made 39 from 28 balls, striking five fours and a six, and remained at the crease long enough to prevent St Lucia from immediately capitalizing when de Kock was dismissed.

Captain Roston Chase eventually removed both.

De Kock departed at 63 for two before King fell at 90 for three in the tenth over. At that point, St Lucia had recovered from an expensive beginning and had an opportunity to pull the innings back toward a more manageable total.

Rutherford Turns 90 for Three Into 177 for Five

That opportunity disappeared once Rutherford settled.

Rivaldo Clarke was struggling to score freely at the other end, but his presence allowed Rutherford to judge when to attack rather than manufacture shots against every delivery.

The pair added 79 for the fourth wicket.

Rutherford’s innings gathered force as Barbados entered the final third of the innings. He targeted Matthew Forde, cleared the boundary repeatedly and reached his half-century from 27 balls.

By the time he was dismissed for 61 from 31, he had struck three fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 196.77.

Chris Green then added a final-ball six to push Barbados to 177 for five.

Rutherford had already made an unbeaten 50 from 28 balls when Barbados survived Andre Russell’s assault to beat Jamaica Kingsmen in Match 4. His second consecutive fifty suggests Barbados may be getting a version of Rutherford they did not consistently see over the previous two CPL seasons.

Rutherford Wants This Season to Show His Worth

His post-match comments made that context important.

“This year for me is very important. For a player who has played CPL so much, I think it’s important for me to just come and show my worth.”

Rutherford also spoke extensively about recovery. Frequent travel and cricket can create mental as well as physical fatigue, so he has focused on massages, pool work, shorter training sessions and staying fresh rather than simply adding more practice.

That approach appears to be helping. He has begun the tournament with scores of 50 not out and 61, while Barbados have won both matches.

St Lucia Match Barbados’ Early Pace

A target of 178 from 18 overs demanded immediate intent, and St Lucia initially responded well.

Johann Jeremiah made 11 before Mujeeb removed him at 41, but Chase kept the chase moving with 34 from 21 balls. The captain struck four fours and two sixes as St Lucia reached 53 for one through their shortened powerplay.

That was only eight runs behind Barbados at the same stage.

Chase had previously helped St Lucia survive Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in their opening CPL 2026 match, but Motie removed him with the final delivery of the sixth over.

St Lucia were 59 for two.

Jewel Andrew then retired hurt after making two, creating another interruption in a chase that needed continuity.

Ackeem Auguste Gives St Lucia a Real Chance

Ackeem Auguste refused to allow the chase to drift.

The young left-hander produced the best innings of St Lucia’s night, scoring 63 from 34 balls with three fours and six sixes.

His approach was especially important because Charith Asalanka struggled for fluency at the other end. Auguste continued finding the boundary and reached his half-century from 28 deliveries.

At 120 for two before Asalanka’s dismissal, St Lucia still had enough batting and enough overs to make Barbados uncomfortable.

Mujeeb changed that equation.

He removed Asalanka for eight, finishing a nine-ball innings in which the Sri Lankan had never quite escaped the pressure being created at the other end.

The bigger wicket arrived 13 balls later.

Motie Removes Auguste at the Moment Barbados Need Him Most

Auguste had survived one Barbados review earlier in his innings and was now the batter capable of deciding the match.

Motie bowled him for 63 at 128 for four.

The timing was decisive.

St Lucia still needed 50 runs from 25 deliveries. That equation was achievable in modern T20 cricket, particularly with the short bursts of power already seen throughout the innings, but it required at least one established batter to remain at the crease.

Auguste’s dismissal removed that advantage.

Motie then dismissed Shadley van Schalkwyk for three. Amari Goodridge briefly reopened the contest by smashing 13 from five balls, including two sixes, before Daniel Sams removed him.

Matthew Forde continued fighting with an unbeaten 24 from 17, but Ramon Simmonds dismissed Joshua Bishop in the final over and St Lucia could reach only 168 for seven.

Motie and Mujeeb Won the Battle Between the Boundaries

There is an interesting statistical detail hidden inside this match.

Both teams hit exactly 11 sixes.

Barbados therefore did not win because they possessed significantly more boundary power. St Lucia showed they could clear the ropes just as often.

The difference came between those big shots.

Mujeeb returned 2 for 27 from four overs. Motie was even better at 3 for 22.

Together, they bowled eight of the 18 overs, conceded 49 runs and took five wickets. Those five wickets included Jeremiah, Chase, Asalanka, Auguste and van Schalkwyk, effectively removing the core of St Lucia’s batting order.

Motie’s economy rate of 5.50 was exceptional in a game where both teams scored above nine runs per over overall.

The decisive numbers

  • Gudakesh Motie: 4 overs, 22 runs, 3 wickets
  • Mujeeb Ur Rahman: 4 overs, 27 runs, 2 wickets
  • Combined: 8 overs, 49 runs, 5 wickets
  • Barbados powerplay: 61/1
  • St Lucia powerplay: 53/1
  • Sixes: Barbados 11, St Lucia 11

Chris Green went for 40 from his four overs without taking a wicket, so this was not a night when every member of Barbados’ spin unit dominated statistically. His presence still gave the Tridents the option of operating with spin for 12 overs while Motie and Mujeeb attacked the matchups that suited them best.

That depth could become important as the tournament moves onto different Caribbean surfaces.

St Lucia Have Now Seen Both Sides of Middle-Overs Spin

The result also carried an interesting tactical echo for St Lucia.

Earlier in the tournament, Chase and Maheesh Theekshana used spin to disrupt Antigua’s chase. Their control helped the Kings recover from dangerous positions and eventually win by four runs.

St Lucia then suffered a very different defeat when Andre Fletcher anchored the Patriots’ successful chase in Match 5.

Against Barbados, the Kings experienced the squeeze themselves.

The lesson was visible in the sequence of wickets. Every time St Lucia began building momentum, Motie or Mujeeb removed someone capable of sustaining it.

Auguste’s 63 deserved more from the game, but his dismissal left too much work for the lower order.

Barbados Go Top, but the Bigger Story Is How They Are Winning

Two victories this early in a long tournament guarantee very little.

They still matter because Barbados have already shown two different ways to defend a total.

Against Jamaica, Daniel Sams took four wickets before the Tridents survived a remarkable late Andre Russell assault.

This time, Rutherford supplied the batting acceleration and the spinners controlled the most important phase of the chase.

That flexibility has taken Barbados to the top of the early CPL 2026 table.

Elsewhere, the tournament has already produced several very different challenges. Mohammad Nabi and Guyana Amazon Warriors overwhelmed Jamaica in Match 6, while Sunil Narine gave defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders a controlled opening victory. The tournament itself began with Antigua and Barbuda Falcons surviving a final-ball finish against Jamaica.

Official fixtures, team information and tournament updates are available through the Caribbean Premier League’s official website.

TSE Verdict: Rutherford Built the Total, Spin Protected It

Rutherford deserved the Player of the Match award because Barbados needed his innings at exactly the point St Lucia had begun recovering.

De Kock created the early momentum. King helped preserve it. Rutherford turned a competitive total into one that demanded almost 10 runs per over from the first ball of the chase.

The match was ultimately secured by Motie and Mujeeb.

St Lucia had enough six-hitting to chase 178. Auguste showed that clearly. What they could not find was a partnership that survived Barbados’ two most effective spinners long enough to control the required rate.

For Rutherford, two successive fifties give substance to his determination to re-establish his value in the CPL.

For Barbados, two wins from two have created something even more useful: early evidence that this team has several different routes to victory.

Jamaica Kingsmen Lose Third Straight as Nabi, Hope Lead Guyana to Thumping Win

Mohammad Nabi delivered a complete all-round performance with 4/22, 19 runs and two catches before Shai Hope finished unbeaten on 56 as Guyana Amazon Warriors opened their CPL 2026 campaign with a six-wicket win over Jamaica Kingsmen.

Mohammad Nabi celebrates after taking four wickets as Guyana Amazon Warriors defeat Jamaica Kingsmen by six wickets in CPL 2026 Match 6 at Sabina Park.

Mohammad Nabi gave Guyana Amazon Warriors exactly the start they wanted to CPL 2026, and Jamaica Kingsmen another night they will want to forget.

Nabi claimed 4 for 22, held two catches and then contributed 19 with the bat as Guyana restricted Jamaica to 117 before completing a six-wicket victory with 35 balls remaining at Sabina Park on Thursday night.

Shai Hope made sure the chase never became complicated, finishing unbeaten on 56 from 41 balls and sealing the result in style with a straight six off Hassan Khan at 14.1 overs.

The victory gave Guyana Amazon Warriors two points from their opening match of the Caribbean Premier League 2026, while Jamaica Kingsmen slipped to a third consecutive defeat.

For Jamaica, the problem was familiar. They found moments of resistance without building an innings around them. Reeza Hendricks made 40, Rovman Powell added 24 and Kirk McKenzie chipped in with 16, but partnerships repeatedly ended before they could become meaningful.

Guyana were more disciplined, particularly once the pitch began slowing. Nabi exploited the larger boundary and used top-spin intelligently, while Imran Tahir and Shamar Joseph kept applying pressure from the other end.

Jamaica’s Innings Never Found a Stable Shape

Jamaica’s problems began almost immediately.

Shayan Jahangir managed only one from seven balls before Khary Pierre removed him in the third over, and Keacy Carty followed for five when Shamar Joseph hit the stumps at the end of the sixth.

The Kingsmen ended the powerplay on 26 for two.

That left Hendricks and captain Powell with the task of rebuilding.

Hendricks looked the most comfortable of Jamaica’s top order, scoring 40 from 32 balls with two fours and two sixes. Powell provided greater acceleration, striking 24 from 17 deliveries, including two sixes.

For a few overs, Jamaica had something resembling control.

Hendricks and Powell carried the total beyond 50 and gave the innings a platform from which a score around 160 remained possible.

Then Guyana’s spinners took over.

Imran Tahir Breaks the Partnership at the Perfect Time

The first major turning point came with the final ball of the 10th over.

Hendricks attempted to force Imran Tahir away but instead offered the captain a return catch, ending the innings at 61 for three.

It was more damaging than the score alone suggested.

Jamaica had spent several overs rebuilding after their poor powerplay, and Hendricks was the batter most capable of carrying that recovery into the death overs.

His dismissal exposed a middle and lower order that never found control.

From 61 for three, Jamaica lost seven wickets for 56 runs.

Mohammad Nabi Turns the Middle Overs Into a Trap

Nabi’s first wicket arrived shortly afterward when Hassan Khan picked out Glenn Phillips for one.

The Afghanistan veteran then became increasingly difficult to attack as the surface slowed.

His method was simple but intelligent.

Nabi later explained that Guyana had used three practice sessions at Sabina Park to identify the bigger boundary and the prevailing wind. His plan was to bowl from an angle that encouraged batters toward the leg side while using top-spin to generate extra bounce.

That detail became important once the ball began gripping.

Powell tried to keep the innings moving, but Tahir removed him for 24 at 77 for five, with Nabi taking the catch.

Then came the decisive sequence.

Andre Russell was caught and bowled by Nabi for one.

Keemo Paul followed for four.

Hunain Shah became Nabi’s fourth victim when he was bowled for five.

Jamaica had collapsed from 77 for four to 101 for nine.

Russell’s Early Exit Removes Jamaica’s Biggest Escape Route

Andre Russell’s dismissal mattered more than his score of one.

Two days earlier, Russell had produced a brutal 68 in Jamaica’s narrow five-run defeat to Barbados Tridents, an innings covered in The Sports Encounter’s Match 4 report.

Against Guyana, there was no repeat rescue.

Nabi gave him enough flight to attack, but Russell sent the return straight back to the bowler.

Once he departed, Jamaica had lost the one batter capable of turning a struggling total into something defendable within a handful of overs.

Guyana’s Bowling Attack Shared the Damage

Nabi led the figures, but this was not a one-man bowling performance.

BowlerOversRunsWicketsEconomy
Mohammad Nabi42245.50
Imran Tahir42626.50
Shamar Joseph2.42228.25
Khary Pierre41714.25
Glenn Phillips1515.00

Pierre’s four overs for 17 helped prevent Jamaica from gaining momentum early, while Tahir removed both Hendricks and Powell.

Joseph accounted for Carty and Vitel Lawes, and Phillips needed only one over to dismiss McKenzie.

Guyana’s bowlers conceded only three wides and two leg byes across the entire innings.

That discipline reflected Tahir’s assessment afterward.

He said Guyana had decided to attack the stumps and adjust quickly once they realized the pitch was playing slower than expected.

Jamaica Scrapes to 117, but the Damage Is Already Done

Vitel Lawes added a late 14 from 11 balls, including a six, to push Jamaica beyond 110.

Joseph bowled him with two balls remaining in the 20th over to complete the innings at 117.

The run rate of 5.94 told the story.

On a surface Tahir believed was capable of producing 170 or 180, Jamaica had finished 50 or 60 runs short of a genuinely competitive total.

Powell admitted as much afterward.

He described the batting as disappointing and pointed toward a series of soft dismissals rather than conditions that were impossible to negotiate.

His bigger concern was the team’s inability to extend partnerships after getting starts.

Blades Gives Jamaica the Perfect Start to the Defense

For roughly 30 minutes, Jamaica threatened to make the small total interesting.

Mavendra Dindyal’s CPL debut lasted one ball.

Jediah Blades found the edge with his second delivery, and wicketkeeper Jahangir completed the catch to leave Guyana 1 for one.

It was exactly the opening Jamaica required.

Phillips responded aggressively.

He struck four fours and a six during a 17-ball 28, refusing to allow the new-ball wicket to create pressure.

The counterattack moved Guyana rapidly toward the target, but Russell then gave Jamaica another opening.

Andre Russell Strikes Twice and Briefly Changes the Mood

Russell dismissed Phillips at 43 for two and then removed Shimron Hetmyer for one three balls later.

Guyana suddenly reached the end of the powerplay at 45 for three.

That was Jamaica’s best point in the match.

A target of 118 still looked modest, but another quick wicket could have introduced genuine doubt.

Instead, Shai Hope and Nabi eliminated the danger.

Hope and Nabi Produce the Partnership Guyana Needed

The pair added 51 from 33 balls for the fourth wicket.

The contrast with Jamaica’s innings was important.

Guyana did not panic after losing three early wickets.

Hope worked the gaps, absorbed pressure and allowed Nabi to keep the scoreboard moving.

Nabi scored 19 from 15 balls with two fours before Vitel Lawes had him caught at long-on with the score at 96.

By then, the match was effectively decided.

The partnership had taken Guyana from 45 for three to within 22 runs of victory.

Shai Hope Turns the Chase Into a Lesson in Control

Hope’s innings was the cleanest batting performance of the match.

He finished unbeaten on 56 from 41 balls, striking two fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 136.58.

His fifty arrived from 40 balls.

The tempo may appear conservative by modern T20 standards, but the situation required control rather than risk.

Guyana had already lost three wickets inside six overs.

There was no need to chase 12 or 13 runs per over.

Hope understood that immediately.

He stayed through the difficult phase, let Nabi rebuild alongside him and then accelerated once victory became inevitable.

The final delivery captured the confidence of the innings.

Hassan Khan floated one full on the stumps, and Hope launched it straight toward the sight screen for six.

Guyana reached 118 for four in 14.1 overs.

Mohammad Nabi Wins Player of the Match With a Complete Performance

Nabi’s figures made the Player of the Match decision straightforward.

He finished with 4 for 22 from four overs, scored 19 from 15 balls and held two catches.

His contribution influenced every phase of the game.

He removed Jamaica’s middle and lower order.

He helped dismiss Powell in the field.

Then he steadied Guyana’s chase after the powerplay wobble.

Nabi’s explanation afterward also revealed how specifically Guyana had prepared for Sabina Park.

He rejected the idea that modern cricket should be dictated by supposed negative matchups between particular batters and bowlers.

Conditions, boundary dimensions and execution mattered more to him.

On this night, the argument was difficult to dispute.

Imran Tahir’s Captaincy Sets the Tone for Guyana

Tahir described the victory as hugely important because Guyana wanted their preparation to translate immediately into results.

His captaincy reflected that preparation.

The bowling changes were measured.

Nabi and Tahir controlled the middle overs.

Pierre’s economy created pressure.

Joseph supplied pace without being overused.

Even Phillips was trusted for an over and delivered a wicket.

Tahir said he treats every appearance for Guyana as though it could be his first or last, describing the captaincy as an honor and a responsibility toward the Guyanese players who want to represent the franchise.

The opening performance suggested the Warriors remain one of the competition’s most organized teams.

Jamaica Kingsmen Are Now 0-3

The more uncomfortable story belongs to Jamaica.

The Kingsmen have now lost three straight matches.

Their season began with a last-ball defeat against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, where Tajinder Singh rescued the chase before a chaotic finish. That match is covered in The Sports Encounter’s CPL opener report.

They then lost by only five runs to Barbados despite Russell’s 68 and a remarkable 20-six chase.

Match 6 was different.

There was no dramatic final over.

No furious late assault.

No sense that one delivery separated victory and defeat.

Guyana were simply better across both innings.

Powell Asks for Patience With a Young Jamaica Side

Powell’s post-match comments reflected concern without panic.

He stressed the need for the leadership group to keep confidence alive and acknowledged that several players remain inexperienced at CPL level and in local conditions.

His message to supporters was equally direct.

Be patient.

Powell said cricket had not been played regularly in Jamaica for some time and some of the local talent still required development.

The squad plans to spend more time together as one group rather than breaking into smaller units, with Powell hoping stronger team cohesion can help end the losing run.

The Kingsmen’s challenge is becoming increasingly urgent.

Three games do not eliminate a team from the CPL, but every additional defeat shrinks the margin for recovery.

Guyana’s Start Could Hardly Have Been Cleaner

Guyana leave Kingston with two points, an enormous net-run-rate boost and the confidence of having controlled their first match from the toss onward.

They dismissed Jamaica with two balls unused.

They completed the chase with 35 balls remaining.

Their captain took two wickets.

The Player of the Match contributed in all three disciplines.

Hope produced an unbeaten fifty.

There are more difficult nights ahead, but this was exactly the kind of opening performance Tahir wanted.

The reigning structure and experience within the Warriors remain obvious.

Elsewhere in the competition, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have already registered their first win after Andre Fletcher anchored their successful chase against St Lucia Kings, while defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders opened their campaign through Sunil Narine’s match-winning spell against the Patriots.

Those results are already beginning to give the early CPL standings shape.

Key Turning Points

  • Hendricks falls at 61/3: Jamaica’s best-set batter departed just as the innings appeared ready to accelerate.
  • Nabi removes Russell: Jamaica’s most dangerous finisher made only one, eliminating the possibility of a late rescue.
  • Jamaica collapse from 77/4 to 101/9: Nabi, Tahir and Phillips completely controlled the middle and late overs.
  • Russell’s double strike: Phillips and Hetmyer fell in the same over, briefly giving Jamaica hope at 45/3.
  • Hope-Nabi partnership: Their 51-run stand from 33 balls ended any realistic chance of a Jamaica comeback.
  • Hope finishes with six: The unbeaten 56 turned a potentially awkward chase into a comfortable six-wicket win.

What the Result Means

Guyana Amazon Warriors begin CPL 2026 with two points and a decisive victory that immediately reinforces their status as one of the tournament’s strongest sides.

Jamaica remain winless after three matches.

The Kingsmen’s first two defeats contained enough encouraging moments to argue that a breakthrough was close.

This performance was harder to defend.

The batting lacked partnerships, the middle order collapsed and 117 was never enough against a Guyana side with this much experience.

Powell’s call for patience is understandable.

The CPL schedule will not wait indefinitely.

Andre Fletcher Hands Patriots Their First Win in the Caribbean Premier League 2026

Andre Fletcher stayed unbeaten on 48 as St Kitts and Nevis Patriots chased 156 in 17.4 overs to beat St Lucia Kings by five wickets and claim their first CPL 2026 win.

Andre Fletcher celebrates after guiding St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to a five-wicket win over St Lucia Kings in CPL 2026 Match 5.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots finally have their first win of the Caribbean Premier League 2026 season, and they earned it by understanding exactly what the chase required.

Andre Fletcher stayed unbeaten on 48 from 41 balls, Kyle Mayers launched 32 from just 16, and the Patriots chased down St Lucia Kings’ 155 for eight with 14 balls to spare at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet.

The five-wicket victory was built on two very different phases. First, Saurabh Netravalkar and Jason Holder combined for six wickets to prevent St Lucia from turning a promising middle-overs position into the 180-plus total captain Roston Chase believed was available. Then Johnson Charles and Mayers attacked from the start of the chase, giving Fletcher the freedom to control the rest.

The result moved the Patriots to one win and one defeat after their rain-affected opening loss to Trinbago Knight Riders, while St Lucia slipped to 1-1 after beginning their campaign with a four-run victory over Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

TL;DR

  • St Kitts and Nevis Patriots defeated St Lucia Kings by five wickets in CPL 2026 Match 5.
  • St Lucia made 155 for eight after recovering from 12 for two through Jewel Andrew’s 58 and Kamil Pooran’s 54.
  • Netravalkar and Holder took three wickets each, with Holder conceding only 20 runs from four overs.
  • Johnson Charles smashed 16 from five balls and Kyle Mayers hit 32 from 16 as the Patriots raced to 59 for two in the powerplay.
  • Andre Fletcher anchored the chase with an unbeaten 48 from 41 deliveries.
  • Wanindu Hasaranga finished the match with a six as the Patriots reached 156 for five in 17.4 overs.
  • The victory gave the Patriots their first win of CPL 2026 after losing their opener to Trinbago Knight Riders.

Netravalkar Strikes Twice Before St Lucia’s Young Batters Take Over

St Lucia chose to bat first and immediately ran into trouble.

Saurabh Netravalkar removed Andries Gous for four in the opening over and then dismissed Ackeem Auguste for a duck in his second spell with the new ball. The Kings were 12 for two after 2.3 overs, and the Patriots had exactly the start Holder wanted.

That early position made the response from Kamil Pooran and Jewel Andrew particularly impressive.

The pair rebuilt aggressively rather than retreating. Their third-wicket stand pushed St Lucia from 12 for two to 94 before Pooran was run out at the end of the 11th over.

Pooran’s 54 came from only 30 deliveries and contained seven fours and three sixes. He reached his half-century from 28 balls and repeatedly punished anything short or overpitched.

Andrew played a slightly different role. He absorbed more deliveries but still found the boundary often enough to keep St Lucia moving, eventually making 58 from 42 balls with two fours and four sixes.

At 82 for two after 10 overs, St Lucia appeared well placed to build toward a total closer to the 180 or 190 Chase later said the team had targeted.

That possibility disappeared quickly.

Holder and Netravalkar Turn 133 for Three Into 141 for Eight

The decisive period of the first innings arrived after Charith Asalanka helped St Lucia move to 133 for three.

Holder removed Asalanka for 14, then bowled Andrew four balls later. Netravalkar followed by dismissing Matthew Forde for two, and Holder struck again to remove Shadley van Schalkwyk.

Obed McCoy then had McKenny Clarke caught behind.

St Lucia had collapsed from 133 for three to 141 for eight in just over three overs.

Holder finished with outstanding figures of three for 20 from four overs, delivering 16 dot balls and conceding only five runs per over. Netravalkar took three for 32, continuing an impressive short-term spell with the Patriots that Holder specifically highlighted after the match.

The captain said Netravalkar had been “outstanding” and explained that he had personally pushed for the left-arm seamer to join the squad for the three matches he was available.

The late squeeze mattered because the Kings had already shown how dangerous they could be with the bat in their four-run victory over Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in Match 3. In that game, Gous scored 82 and St Lucia reached 187 for eight.

This time, they managed only 22 runs from the final 4.5 overs after Asalanka’s dismissal.

Chase later admitted his side had left roughly 30 to 35 runs on the field.

Charles and Mayers Refuse to Let the Chase Become Complicated

The Patriots had been bowled into submission by Sunil Narine and Trinbago Knight Riders in their opening match, scoring only 109 for nine before losing by 19 runs under the DLS method. That defeat is covered in our CPL 2026 Match 2 report.

Against St Lucia, there was no sign of the same caution.

Johnson Charles attacked immediately.

He scored 16 from five balls at a strike rate of 320, including two sixes, before Matthew Forde bowled him in the second over.

Kyle Mayers then took over.

Forde suffered badly in his second over as Mayers launched three sixes and two fours during a brutal counterattack. The left-hander reached 32 from only 16 deliveries before Maheesh Theekshana had him caught at deep midwicket.

By then, the damage had already been done.

The Patriots reached 50 after only four overs and finished the powerplay at 59 for two. Chasing 156, they had reduced the required rate to a level where the middle order no longer needed to manufacture boundaries every over.

Holder later described that early acceleration as crucial because it kept his team ahead of the required rate throughout the chase.

Fletcher Changes Roles and Controls the Middle Overs

Andre Fletcher’s innings was not spectacular in the conventional T20 sense.

It was more useful than that.

Once Charles and Mayers had done the damage, Fletcher recognized that the Patriots no longer needed reckless batting. He rotated the strike, chose his attacking moments carefully and allowed others to play around him.

Kevin Wickham added 19 from 20 balls during a 45-run partnership before Theekshana struck again.

Holder made 10, while Dasun Shanaka contributed 12 from nine. Their dismissals briefly gave St Lucia a route back into the contest as the Patriots moved from 97 for three to 137 for five.

Fletcher never lost control.

He finished unbeaten on 48 from 41 balls, with three fours and a six, after also taking two catches earlier in the match.

That composed approach earned him Player of the Match.

Fletcher explained afterward that the original plan had been to attack hard in the powerplay. Once Charles departed and later Mayers fell, his role changed.

He decided to bat deep, rotate strike and make sure the chase did not drift away from the Patriots.

Hasaranga Finishes It With Authority

Wanindu Hasaranga joined Fletcher with 19 runs still required and kept the chase moving.

The finishing blow came from the fourth ball of the 18th over.

Forde went short and down the leg side. Hasaranga used the pace, helped the ball over the wicketkeeper and watched it clear the boundary for six.

The Patriots reached 156 for five in 17.4 overs.

Fletcher celebrated with a rare burst of emotion after spending most of the chase remarkably calm.

St Lucia’s spinners had done their best to make the middle overs competitive. Theekshana took two for 22 from four overs, Joshua Bishop conceded only 25 while claiming Shanaka, and Chase finished with one for 32.

Forde, however, endured a difficult night. His 2.4 overs cost 47 runs, including much of the early assault from Charles and Mayers.

The Real Turning Point Came Before the Chase

Fletcher’s unbeaten innings will understandably dominate the result, but the Patriots probably won the match during St Lucia’s final five overs.

The Kings had reached 133 for three with almost five overs remaining.

A total around 180 was still realistic.

Instead, Holder, Netravalkar and McCoy took five wickets while allowing only 22 more runs.

That changed the chase entirely.

St Lucia’s captain recognized the same issue afterward, saying 180 or 190 had been the original target and that his team finished approximately 30 to 35 runs short.

Once the Patriots scored 59 during the powerplay, the required rate never became a serious problem.

The match offered a sharp contrast with the previous CPL fixture, when Barbados Tridents survived Andre Russell’s astonishing assault to beat Jamaica Kingsmen by five runs. That contest became a frantic finish because Jamaica remained within striking distance.

Here, the Patriots made sure the chase rarely reached that stage.

Holder Gets the Response He Needed

For Jason Holder, the result was less about perfection and more about preventing an 0-2 start.

He praised the bowling attack, Fletcher’s composure and the aggressive opening approach, while also admitting the Patriots had been sloppy in the field and could improve their energy.

His own contribution was significant.

Holder’s three for 20 was the most economical spell of the match, and ESPNcricinfo rated him as its match MVP despite Fletcher taking the official Player of the Match award.

The Patriots now have two points and some breathing room before moving on to Antigua.

That matters after the way their campaign began against TKR.

Across the competition, CPL 2026 has already produced wildly different match types. The opener went to the final delivery as Antigua and Barbuda Falcons edged Jamaica Kingsmen, Match 2 was shaped by rain and Narine, Match 3 went down to a four-run margin, and Match 4 produced Russell’s extraordinary late assault.

Match 5 was different.

The Patriots won by taking control early enough that the final overs never became desperate.

What the Result Means for St Lucia Kings

St Lucia can take encouragement from Andrew and Pooran.

Chase emphasized afterward that his squad is extremely young and praised both batters for responding after the early wickets.

The concern is what happened around them.

After Pooran’s run-out, only Andrew reached double figures among the remaining batters. The Kings’ last six wickets added just 61 runs, and the final five overs produced far less than the platform demanded.

That was a major change from their season-opening win, when their top order and spin attack combined effectively against Antigua.

The loss leaves St Lucia 1-1, but there is little reason for alarm this early in the tournament. The more important question is whether Andrew and Pooran can turn this performance into something sustainable as the competition develops.

Patriots Leave Gros Islet With Something to Build On

Holder summed up the significance simply: one-and-one is considerably better than zero-and-two.

The Patriots still have areas to clean up. Their fielding lacked sharpness, several half-chances went begging, and the middle order gave St Lucia enough wickets to briefly reopen the chase.

But they also showed the balance a good T20 side needs.

Netravalkar attacked with the new ball. Holder controlled the death overs. Charles and Mayers destroyed the required rate early. Fletcher then understood when acceleration was no longer necessary.

That combination delivered the Patriots’ first victory of CPL 2026.

The broader franchise game continues to reward precisely that ability to change roles during an innings. The Sports Encounter recently explored the evolution of modern T20 batting when Jos Buttler became the format’s leading career run-scorer, while the remarkable defensive effort in the Global Super League final showed how quickly T20 assumptions can collapse.

The Patriots did not need anything extraordinary in St Lucia.

They simply read the game better once the important moments arrived.
