RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, October 8, 2026: Pakistan begin another T20I reset on Friday, only days after losing the Asian Games final to India, with Sahibzada Farhan replacing Salman Ali Agha as captain, several familiar names returning and several selection questions remaining stubbornly unanswered.
Sri Lanka arrive in Rawalpindi with their own problems.
Pathum Nissanka and Wanindu Hasaranga are unavailable through injury. Dushmantha Chameera has been selected subject to fitness. Kusal Mendis returns to lead the side after a hamstring problem kept him out of September’s T20I series in England. icc
Yet the visitors may actually enter the three-match series with less psychological pressure.

Shadab Khan Is Back, but Pakistan Need More Than the Familiar Version
Shadab’s name immediately attracts attention because Pakistan have repeatedly gone back to him when searching for balance.
Pakistan are at home, have changed their T20I captain again, have made another substantial squad reshuffle and are still trying to establish what their preferred short-format team actually looks like.
Sri Lanka can simply attack those uncertainties.
The series begins October 9, with the second and third matches on October 11 and 13. All three are at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. icc
For Pakistan, the question is larger than whether they beat Sri Lanka.
It is whether this latest selection cycle finally starts looking like a plan.
Pakistan vs Sri Lanka T20I Series Schedule
| Match | Date | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 1st T20I | October 9, 2026 | Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium |
| 2nd T20I | October 11, 2026 | Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium |
| 3rd T20I | October 13, 2026 | Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium |
All three matches form the opening leg of Sri Lanka’s lengthy Pakistan tour before the subsequent ODI tri-series and Test matches.
Pakistan Have Changed the Captain, but Have They Changed the Direction?
Pakistan’s biggest story is not a returning player.
It is the armband.
Farhan replaces Salman Ali Agha after leading Pakistan to silver at the Asian Games, where India beat them by 19 runs in the final.
TSE has already examined the scale of the change in PCB Hits T20 Reset: Farhan Replaces Agha as Captain With Seven World Cup Players Shown Exit Way.
The numbers explain why Farhan was impossible to ignore.
He scored 383 runs at the 2026 T20 World Cup, more than any batter had previously scored in a single edition, averaging 76.60 at a strike rate of 160.25. He also became the first player to score two centuries in one men’s T20 World Cup. icc
One of those hundreds came against Sri Lanka.
Farhan made 100 from 60 balls as Pakistan scored 212/8 and beat Sri Lanka by five runs in the Super Eight stage. icc
The batting case for giving him greater responsibility is strong.
The captaincy question is more complicated.
Pakistan have spent too much of the recent T20 cycle changing leaders, combinations and selection philosophies for one appointment to automatically create stability.
Farhan now has an opportunity to change that narrative.
Pakistan’s Musical-Chair Captaincy Has Become Part of the Problem
T20 cricket rewards clearly defined roles.
Pakistan have often behaved as though roles can be rewritten every few months.
Salman Ali Agha was entrusted with the T20 program through the World Cup cycle.
Now he is not even in the T20I squad.
Shaheen Shah Afridi remains ODI captain but is absent from this T20I series.
Babar Azam is also absent.
Farhan captains T20Is.
That separation may eventually prove sensible.
At present, however, it reinforces the perception that Pakistan are still searching for a settled leadership structure rather than operating one.
The Sri Lanka series therefore matters for Farhan beyond three results.
He needs to show that his side understands how it wants to bat, who bowls which phases and which players are being developed for specific jobs.
Pakistan have plenty of talent.
Clarity remains the more valuable commodity.
Pakistan’s Full T20I Squad
| Player | Primary Role |
|---|---|
| Sahibzada Farhan (captain) | Opening batter |
| Abdul Samad | Middle-order power hitter |
| Abrar Ahmed | Leg-spinner |
| Arafat Minhas | Spin-bowling all-rounder |
| Fakhar Zaman | Top-order batter |
| Hasan Nawaz | Aggressive batter |
| Muhammad Imran Randhawa | Pace-bowling all-rounder |
| Khawaja Nafay | Wicketkeeper-batter |
| Maaz Sadaqat | Batting all-rounder |
| Naseem Shah | Fast bowler |
| Razaullah | Fast-bowling all-rounder |
| Saim Ayub | Top-order batter / spin option |
| Mohammad Salman Mirza | Left-arm fast bowler |
| Shadab Khan | Leg-spin all-rounder |
| Sufiyan Moqim | Left-arm wrist-spinner |
The official ICC squad announcement confirms Farhan’s captaincy and all 15 selections. icc
Shadab Khan Is Back, but Pakistan Need More Than the Familiar Version
Shadab’s name immediately attracts attention because Pakistan have repeatedly gone back to him when searching for balance.
He remains one of the most experienced T20 players in the squad.
His career numbers are substantial:
- 124 T20Is
- 1,009 runs
- Strike rate above 144
- 123 wickets
- 44 catches icc
He also produced strong franchise performances during 2026, something TSE examined in Out-of-Favor Pakistani Players Are Winning T20 Titles Worldwide.
The question now is whether that franchise form translates back into a meaningful international role.
Shadab went wicketless in Pakistan’s last two T20 World Cup matches against England and Sri Lanka. icc
Pakistan do not need him merely because he offers batting and bowling on the team sheet.
They need wickets through the middle overs, energetic fielding and lower-order runs at a tempo that changes matches.
If Shadab delivers all three, Pakistan suddenly become much better balanced.
If he does not, the familiar argument about his place will return quickly.
Fakhar Zaman and Naseem Shah Bring Experience Back Into a Young Group
The squad is not completely experimental.
Fakhar Zaman gives Pakistan another top-order batter capable of destroying a Powerplay.
Naseem Shah offers pace, new-ball movement and death-over experience.
Their presence matters because Farhan is inheriting a squad containing several players still trying to establish themselves internationally.
Fakhar’s role creates an interesting selection issue.
Do Pakistan open with Farhan and Saim Ayub?
Do they reunite Farhan and Fakhar after their record T20 World Cup opening partnership against Sri Lanka?
Or does Fakhar bat at No. 3 to keep Saim’s left-hand option at the top?
Pakistan cannot play every aggressive top-order batter in his preferred position.
Farhan’s first major captaincy test may therefore arrive before the toss.
Hasan Nawaz Deserves to Carry His Asian Games Form Into the XI
Hasan Nawaz strengthened his case with one of Pakistan’s few genuinely impressive performances in the Asian Games final.
He made 96 from 51 balls against India while the rest of Pakistan’s chase repeatedly lost momentum.
Pakistan eventually finished 192/6 chasing 212.
The silver medal should not obscure the quality of Hasan’s innings.
TSE’s Asian Games closing report documented how his lone resistance kept the chase alive after India had taken control.
Against Sri Lanka, he should be more than squad depth.
Pakistan need to determine whether that performance can become part of a sustained international role.
Akif Javed and Ali Raza Are the More Difficult Selection Questions
This is where Pakistan’s squad becomes harder to defend.
Akif Javed and Ali Raza were both selected for the Asian Games squad as uncapped T20I options. ICC’s original tournament announcement specifically identified them among the players in contention for first caps. icc
Pakistan then had their quarterfinal abandoned.
They played Bangladesh in the semifinal.
They played India in the final.
Neither Akif nor Ali was given the sustained international opportunity that selection for a development-heavy Asian Games squad appeared designed to provide.
Now both are out again.
That is a legitimate selection concern.
Development squads only create value when selectors actually use the matches to evaluate developing players.
A player can reasonably be omitted after failing when given opportunities.
It is harder to evaluate someone who was selected for an international event, barely tested and then removed from the next squad.
Pakistan need greater continuity in this area.
Selection cannot become an endless cycle of call-up, bench, omission and replacement.
Salman Mirza’s Selection Is More Defensible Than It First Appears
There is one point where the criticism needs qualification.
Salman Mirza has not been uniformly unimpressive in international cricket.
His ICC career record entering this series is actually strong:
17 T20Is, 23 wickets, bowling average 16.13, economy 6.43.
He also currently sits inside the ICC’s top 20 T20I bowlers. icc
His more recent returns have been mixed.
He took 3/24 against the Netherlands and 1/11 against Namibia at the T20 World Cup, but also went wicketless against England and Australia. icc
So the better question is not why Pakistan have selected an obviously unsuccessful bowler.
They have not.
The more relevant question is why Mirza continues to receive repeated opportunities while younger fast bowlers such as Akif and Ali Raza move in and out without comparable evaluation.
That is a selection-process issue rather than a simple statistical one.
Sufiyan Moqim Could Be Pakistan’s Most Important Bowler in the Series
Pakistan’s strongest middle-over weapon may be Sufiyan Moqim.
His 2026 franchise season has already made a persuasive case.
TSE’s analysis of Pakistani players winning T20 titles worldwide highlighted his 22-wicket PSL campaign and subsequent influence in the Caribbean.
Sri Lanka generally play spin more comfortably than many touring teams.
That makes Moqim’s role even more interesting.
If he can still take wickets against batters raised on slow bowling, Pakistan gain an important tactical advantage.
Pairing him with Shadab, Abrar Ahmed or Arafat Minhas also gives Farhan multiple spin combinations depending on conditions.
Sri Lanka Arrive Without Nissanka and Hasaranga
Sri Lanka’s squad has significant omissions.
Pathum Nissanka is unavailable.
Wanindu Hasaranga is also ruled out.
Both are major T20 players and their absence removes proven quality from the batting and spin departments. icc
That should favor Pakistan.
It does not make Sri Lanka weak.
Maheesh Theekshana remains.
Dunith Wellalage remains.
Vijayakanth Viyaskanth adds another spin option.
Nuwan Thushara brings an unusual slingy release.
Eshan Malinga gives the pace attack another wicket-taking option.
Binura Fernando returns after injury.
Chameera is in the squad subject to fitness. srilankacricket.lk
Sri Lanka have lost star power.
They still possess enough variety to expose a Pakistan batting lineup that has not yet settled.
Sri Lanka T20I Squad
| Player | Primary Role |
|---|---|
| Kusal Mendis (captain) | Wicketkeeper-batter |
| Kamil Mishara | Top-order batter |
| Sineth Jayawardena | Batter |
| Lahiru Udara | Batter |
| Sahan Arachchige | Batting all-rounder |
| Kamindu Mendis | Batting all-rounder |
| Dasun Shanaka | Power-hitting all-rounder |
| Chamindu Wickramasinghe | All-rounder |
| Dunith Wellalage | Spin-bowling all-rounder |
| Maheesh Theekshana | Mystery spinner |
| Vijayakanth Viyaskanth | Leg-spinner |
| Binura Fernando | Left-arm fast bowler |
| Nuwan Thushara | Fast bowler |
| Eshan Malinga | Fast bowler |
| Dushmantha Chameera | Fast bowler, subject to fitness |
Kusal Mendis leads a side built around multiple bowling variations and several flexible middle-order options. icc
Kusal Mendis Returns to Conditions He Already Understands
Mendis is particularly important because Pakistan will not feel unfamiliar to him.
He had an outstanding PSL earlier this year with Peshawar Zalmi, scoring 550 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate above 168.
He also became the first Sri Lankan to score a PSL century when he made 109 from 52 balls against Karachi Kings.
That familiarity matters.
Mendis has played these surfaces.
He has faced Pakistani bowlers in franchise competition.
He understands Rawalpindi’s dimensions, pace and scoring patterns far better than a visiting captain arriving cold.
TSE has already examined how productive Mendis became in Pakistan in Jason Holder Powers West Indies Past Sri Lanka in 1st T20I, including his highly productive PSL partnership with Babar Azam.
His return also comes after a right hamstring injury kept him out of Sri Lanka’s September T20I series in England. icc
That makes this series both a leadership assignment and a return test.
Sri Lanka’s Recent T20I Form Is Poor, but the Context Matters
Sri Lanka were swept 3-0 by England in September.
England won:
- the first T20I by six wickets
- the second by eight wickets
- the third by 89 runs icc
Sri Lanka then sent a different group to the Asian Games.
That side suffered a brutal semifinal defeat to India, bowled out for only 45, before recovering to beat Bangladesh by 63 runs in the bronze-medal match. icc
So Sri Lanka do not arrive in convincing T20 form either.
The important distinction is pressure.
Pakistan are the home side undergoing another leadership and selection reset.
Sri Lanka can afford to be more opportunistic.
That may make them dangerous.
Pakistan’s Recent Results Hide the Bigger Problem
Pakistan won the Asian Games semifinal against Bangladesh.
They then lost the final to India by 19 runs.
Farhan’s side did enough to earn silver, but the final exposed familiar weaknesses.
India’s batting attacked Pakistan’s bowling changes.
Hasan Nawaz then fought almost alone during the chase.
TSE’s Asian Games tournament review recorded the 211/6 to 192/6 result and Hasan’s 96.
That performance followed Pakistan’s inconsistent T20 World Cup.
Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by five runs in their final Super Eight game but still failed to reach the semifinals because New Zealand progressed on net run rate. icc
Farhan was outstanding.
Pakistan were not.
That remains the contradiction entering this series.
Pakistan Batting Strength: Power Has Replaced Scarcity
Pakistan once had a T20 problem built around conservative top-order batting.
This squad has almost the opposite issue.
Farhan.
Saim.
Fakhar.
Hasan Nawaz.
Abdul Samad.
Maaz Sadaqat.
Khawaja Nafay.
There is no shortage of players who want to attack.
The challenge is arranging them correctly.
Pakistan need someone to manage innings when early wickets fall.
They also need defined finishers.
Having seven aggressive batters does not automatically produce one coherent batting unit.
Farhan and the coaching staff have three matches to find the right sequencing.
Sri Lanka Batting Strength: Mendis, Kamindu and Shanaka Give Them Experience
Sri Lanka’s batting loses considerable firepower without Nissanka and Hasaranga.
Mendis becomes even more important.
Kamindu Mendis gives them adaptability.
Dasun Shanaka remains capable of changing a final five overs quickly.
Kamil Mishara has also shown he can bat aggressively in Pakistan, including a 59 against Pakistan in last year’s Rawalpindi tri-series final.
Sri Lanka will probably need contributions from more than one of these players because the top order is less imposing without Nissanka.
If Mendis falls early, the innings becomes far easier for Pakistan to control.
Pakistan Bowling Strength: Variety
Pakistan can construct almost any bowling combination.
Naseem gives pace.
Mirza offers left-arm angle.
Razaullah and Imran Randhawa offer all-round seam options.
Abrar, Shadab and Sufiyan provide three distinctly different forms of spin.
Saim and Arafat can contribute supplementary overs.
That variety is useful in a three-match series at one venue because the pitch may change as the series progresses.
Pakistan’s difficulty will be choosing the right five or six rather than simply possessing options.
Sri Lanka Bowling Strength: Better Defined Roles
Sri Lanka may have the clearer bowling structure.
Theekshana is a Powerplay and middle-over control bowler.
Wellalage gives left-arm spin and batting depth.
Viyaskanth offers wrist spin.
Thushara can attack with his unusual release.
Binura changes angles as a left-armer.
Malinga brings pace.
Chameera, if fit, adds genuine experience.
Pakistan’s batters may have more explosive potential.
Sri Lanka’s bowling roles look easier to define.
That could become particularly important if rain shortens a match and captains have fewer overs to recover from poor bowling choices.
Sri Lanka Hold a Clear Advantage in Fielding
This may be the least glamorous difference between the sides.
It could also decide a close game.
Pakistan’s fielding has remained inconsistent across generations and tournaments.
Dropped catches, rushed throws, boundary misfields and poor decision-making continue to appear too regularly.
Sri Lanka are generally more disciplined in this area.
Kusal Mendis himself pointed to poor catching and fielding after Sri Lanka’s heavy ODI loss to England last month, as TSE reported in Banton Ton Helps England Destroy Sri Lanka in ODI Series Decider.
Sri Lanka clearly have standards they know they failed to meet there.
Pakistan’s problem is more persistent.
In a three-match T20I series, two dropped chances can be the difference between winning 2-1 and losing 1-2.
Pakistan cannot treat fielding as secondary to batting and bowling.
Rawalpindi Weather Could Interfere With the Series
The weather deserves genuine attention.
Pakistan Meteorological Department’s current weekly outlook says a weak westerly system is expected to approach upper Pakistan from October 9, bringing scattered rain, wind and thunderstorms to Islamabad and northern Punjab through October 13 with occasional gaps. Rawalpindi sits inside that broader risk area. Flood Forecasting Division — FFD Lahore
Private forecast models are less pessimistic about the first match itself, although they also show thunderstorm risk around the Rawalpindi region during the period. AccuWeather
The sensible conclusion is:
Rain is a legitimate series risk, but a washout should not be assumed.
That matters tactically.
If one match becomes shortened, explosive Powerplay batting and deeper bowling variety become more valuable.
Pakistan probably benefit from that type of contest because of their concentration of attacking top-order batters.
Sri Lanka, however, may prefer a reduced game if Theekshana, Thushara and their other strike bowlers can attack immediately without needing to manage a full 20-over workload.
What Could Pakistan’s XI Look Like?
A plausible combination would be:
- Sahibzada Farhan
- Saim Ayub
- Fakhar Zaman
- Hasan Nawaz
- Khawaja Nafay
- Shadab Khan
- Arafat Minhas / Abdul Samad
- Naseem Shah
- Mohammad Salman Mirza
- Sufiyan Moqim
- Abrar Ahmed / Razaullah
This is an editorial projection, not an announced XI.
The most difficult calls are the balance between Abdul Samad and Arafat Minhas, and whether Pakistan require three specialist spin options.
Rawalpindi conditions and weather may decide that.
What Could Sri Lanka’s XI Look Like?
A plausible Sri Lanka combination would be:
- Kamil Mishara
- Lahiru Udara / Sineth Jayawardena
- Kusal Mendis
- Kamindu Mendis
- Sahan Arachchige
- Dasun Shanaka
- Dunith Wellalage
- Maheesh Theekshana
- Nuwan Thushara
- Eshan Malinga
- Dushmantha Chameera / Binura Fernando
Again, this is a projection.
Chameera’s fitness remains the major variable.
Five Players Who Could Decide the Series
Sahibzada Farhan
The new captain is also Pakistan’s most compelling T20 batter after his record-breaking World Cup.
If Farhan scores, leadership becomes easier.
If he struggles, every captaincy decision will receive more attention.
Shadab Khan
Pakistan need his full all-round value.
This series could either restore him as a central T20 player or deepen questions about his international role.
Sufiyan Moqim
A wicket-taking middle-over spinner can decide T20 series.
Moqim’s 2026 franchise performances suggest Pakistan should give him that responsibility.
Kusal Mendis
He knows Pakistani conditions, enjoyed a superb PSL and now returns to captain Sri Lanka after injury.
He is the visitor most capable of controlling the series with the bat.
Maheesh Theekshana
Pakistan’s aggressive top order will attack.
Theekshana’s ability to deny easy Powerplay boundaries could determine whether that strategy succeeds.
Who Has the Stronger Squad?
On raw talent and depth, Pakistan.
On selection clarity, Sri Lanka may have the edge.
Pakistan can choose from more explosive batting options and more spin combinations.
Sri Lanka are missing two of their biggest names.
That should make Pakistan favorites.
But Pakistan’s superiority exists mostly on paper until they show that the pieces actually fit together.
Sri Lanka have enough bowling variety to exploit a batting collapse and enough batting experience to punish poor fielding.
This is closer than the squads initially suggest.
Series Prediction: Pakistan Start Ahead, but 3-0 Would Be a Surprise
Pakistan should begin as favorites because:
- they are at home;
- Nissanka and Hasaranga are absent;
- Farhan is in outstanding T20 form;
- Pakistan have greater batting depth;
- their spin options are extensive;
- Rawalpindi is familiar territory.
Sri Lanka can still win the series because:
- Pakistan’s captaincy structure is new;
- selection remains unstable;
- Sri Lanka field better;
- Mendis knows Pakistan conditions;
- Theekshana and their pace variations can expose an aggressive lineup;
- weather could turn one match into a shorter, less predictable contest.
TSE prediction: Pakistan 2-1 Sri Lanka.
Pakistan have enough individual quality to win two matches.
Whether they look convincing while doing it is the more important question.
The Real Test Is Whether Pakistan Stop Resetting
Pakistan can win this series and still learn nothing.
That would happen if they rotate half the squad, change roles every game and then select an entirely different combination for the next assignment.
The more valuable outcome would be clarity.
Can Farhan captain without becoming overly conservative?
Can Hasan Nawaz secure a permanent role?
Can Sufiyan become a first-choice T20 spinner?
Can Shadab turn franchise form into international impact?
Can Pakistan explain why certain younger fast bowlers are being developed while others disappear?
Can the selectors finally give players enough consecutive matches to be judged properly?
Sri Lanka will test all of those questions.
They arrive without their strongest possible XI, which actually increases the pressure on Pakistan.
A home defeat would be difficult to excuse.
A series win would be useful.
A coherent series win would mean much more.
