KARACHI, Pakistan, October 5, 2026: Pakistan have handed Sahibzada Farhan control of the T20I side against Sri Lanka and left Salman Ali Agha out of the squad, but the captaincy change tells only part of what the selectors have done.

Seven members of Pakistan’s 15-player T20 World Cup squad are missing from the group selected for the three matches in Rawalpindi.

Salman, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan and Usman Tariq have all dropped out of the T20I group.

Abdul Samad, Arafat Minhas, Hasan Nawaz, Muhammad Imran Randhawa, Maaz Sadaqat, Razaullah and Sufiyan Moqim come in.

Story at a glance

Sahibzada Farhan in Pakistan colors after replacing Salman Ali Agha as T20I captain for the 2026 home series against Sri Lanka.
THE BIG PICTURE

What Has Pakistan Changed for the Sri Lanka T20I Series?

Almost half the World Cup squad.

Why Has Sahibzada Farhan Become Pakistan’s T20I Captain?

The PCB did not publish a detailed explanation for the decision, so any claim about the selectors’ private reasoning would be speculation.

Farhan’s World Cup Numbers Make the Leadership Change Hard to Ignore

Farhan scored 323 more runs than Salman during the tournament.

Why Is Sri Lanka an Appropriate First Opponent for Farhan?

Because one of the defining innings of his career came against them.

What Does Salman Ali Agha’s Omission Actually Mean?

It means he is out of this T20I squad.

That amounts to a 46.7% turnover from Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad.

The new captain is also the player who supplied Pakistan’s strongest individual argument for building the next version of the side around him.

Farhan scored 383 runs at the 2026 T20 World Cup, the highest total by any batter in a single edition of the men’s tournament. He averaged 76.60, struck at 160.25 and became the first batter to score two centuries in one men’s T20 World Cup.

Salman, who captained Pakistan at the tournament, scored 60 runs at an average of 10.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has not publicly stated that those batting numbers caused the leadership change. They do, however, show how dramatically the center of Pakistan’s T20 batting shifted during the tournament.

The PCB’s official squad announcement names Farhan captain for the three Sri Lanka T20Is on October 9, 11 and 13 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Importantly, the PCB has announced Farhan specifically for this series. It has not described the appointment as a permanent T20I captaincy beyond Sri Lanka.

Eight of the World Cup squad survive into the Sri Lanka series.

Seven have been replaced.

The number is useful because it shows that Pakistan have gone considerably further than changing the captain.

TSE had already examined the depth available outside the most established names in our analysis of Pakistani players producing match-winning T20 performances in franchise cricket. Several of the players discussed there now sit inside the senior squad together.

Why Has Sahibzada Farhan Become Pakistan’s T20I Captain?

The PCB did not publish a detailed explanation for the decision, so any claim about the selectors’ private reasoning would be speculation.

The evidence surrounding Farhan is easier to establish.

He has produced an extraordinary T20 year with the bat and has already been given a recent trial as captain.

Pakistan appointed him to lead the Asian Games side in June. At the time, the PCB noted that Farhan had already played 46 T20Is and scored 1,305 international runs.

His leadership assignment in Japan produced a silver medal.

The sample was unusual because Pakistan’s quarterfinal against Hong Kong was abandoned without a ball being bowled and Pakistan advanced through their superior ranking. Farhan then captained the side to a six-wicket semifinal victory over Bangladesh before India beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the gold-medal match.

TSE’s Asian Games quarterfinal analysis examined the specialized T20 roles available in Farhan’s squad before the knockout stage.

Our Asian Games closing report then documented the India-Pakistan final, where Hasan Nawaz’s 96 from 51 balls kept Pakistan in a 212-run chase before they finished 19 short.

The Asian Games therefore did not provide a long captaincy sample.

It did give Farhan recent experience leading several of the players who now join him in the senior T20I squad.

Farhan scored 323 more runs than Salman during the tournament.

His strike rate was 29.82 percentage points higher.

The ICC subsequently selected Farhan in its Team of the Tournament after he established a new men’s T20 World Cup record for runs in a single edition.

His 383 also included two centuries, another first in the competition’s history.

The ICC’s official Team of the Tournament announcement described Farhan as Pakistan’s consistently outstanding batter despite the team’s Super Eight elimination.

Why Is Sri Lanka an Appropriate First Opponent for Farhan?

Because one of the defining innings of his career came against them.

Pakistan met Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight match at the T20 World Cup in February.

Farhan made 100 from 60 deliveries.

Fakhar Zaman scored 84 from 42.

The pair added 176 for the opening wicket, which became the highest partnership for any wicket in men’s T20 World Cup history.

Pakistan made 212 for eight and beat Sri Lanka by five runs.

The victory was insufficient to take Pakistan into the semifinals because New Zealand progressed on net run rate, but Farhan left the tournament with the individual scoring record.

The first series of his new leadership assignment therefore comes against a bowling attack and opponent attached to one of his most significant international performances.

What Does Salman Ali Agha’s Omission Actually Mean?

It means he is out of this T20I squad.

It does not mean Pakistan have discarded him across formats.

Salman has been named in the 16-man ODI squad for the subsequent tri-series against England and Sri Lanka, where Shaheen Shah Afridi remains captain.

That makes the current selection more clearly a T20-specific decision.

Salman’s T20 captaincy began in March 2025, when the PCB promoted him with the Asia Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup specifically identified as major targets.

The PCB’s original captaincy announcement made that planning cycle explicit.

The period was not empty of results.

Pakistan won bilateral T20I series against Bangladesh, West Indies and South Africa during 2025 and also won two tri-series under Salman’s leadership.

By August 2026, the PCB credited him with having led Pakistan in 50 T20Is.

The larger objective was the World Cup.

Pakistan reached the Super Eight stage but failed to qualify for the semifinals despite beating Sri Lanka in their final match.

Salman’s own batting return of 60 runs from six innings left him well behind Pakistan’s leading performers.

The Sri Lanka squad announcement now closes, at least temporarily, the captaincy cycle that began with the World Cup in mind.

Why Are Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi Also Missing?

The captaincy headline should not obscure the other major omissions.

Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi are both absent from the T20I squad.

So are Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Usman Khan and Usman Tariq.

The PCB announcement gives no injury explanation or individual selection rationale for those omissions.

It would therefore be wrong to assign one.

Babar and Salman both remain in Pakistan’s ODI plans, while Shaheen will captain the ODI side in the tri-series.

This reinforces the impression of selectors separating formats more aggressively rather than removing every senior player from the national setup.

Pakistan’s repeated leadership changes across formats have already become a significant part of the national-team story. TSE explored the consequences of that instability when Babar returned to the Test captaincy earlier this year.

What Does the New Squad Say About Pakistan’s T20 Direction?

The names suggest greater emphasis on specialist T20 skills, power and players who have spent much of 2026 performing in shorter-format environments.

That interpretation comes from the players’ recent records, rather than from a declared PCB policy.

Shadab Khan remains in the squad after a strong CPL campaign in which his batting and bowling impact returned simultaneously. TSE documented one of his most complete performances when Shadab smashed an unbeaten 52 and conceded only eight runs in four overs against TKR.

Later in the competition, he again influenced both disciplines as Antigua defeated Guyana by 65 runs.

Sufiyan Moqim arrives after an even stronger trophy year.

He finished HBL PSL 11 as the leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets and then produced four for 14 in the CPL final as Antigua and Barbuda Falcons won their first title.

TSE’s CPL final report showed how Moqim and the Pakistan-heavy Falcons attack controlled the championship match.

Why Maaz Sadaqat’s Selection Is Worth Watching

Maaz Sadaqat gives the squad another attacking left-handed option and represents one of the clearest examples of Pakistan accelerating a young player through strong franchise performances.

TSE’s detailed profile of Maaz Sadaqat traced his rise from domestic cricket through the PSL and into a 112-run CPL playoff innings.

That development continued through the Asian Games.

His role in the Sri Lanka series will therefore reveal whether the selectors see him primarily as squad depth or are ready to begin establishing him in Pakistan’s senior T20 combinations.

Hasan Nawaz Adds Another Power Option

Hasan Nawaz’s place also fits the recent evidence.

He scored 76 from 48 balls during Antigua’s CPL victory over TKR, helping rebuild an innings from 62 for three before the Falcons reached 183.

TSE’s report on that match showed his ability to combine recovery batting with boundary power.

He then played one of Pakistan’s most important innings at the Asian Games, scoring 96 from 51 balls in the final against India.

Pakistan lost, but Hasan’s ability to keep a 212 chase alive after the top order had slipped to 39 for three provided another senior-level argument for continued opportunities.

What Could Pakistan’s Batting Order Look Like?

Farhan and Saim Ayub are the obvious opening candidates based on their recent international roles.

Fakhar provides another experienced top-order option and could alter the left-right combination depending on how Pakistan want to structure the Powerplay.

The more interesting selection decisions begin below them.

Hasan Nawaz, Abdul Samad and Maaz Sadaqat all offer boundary-hitting ability. Khawaja Nafay gives Pakistan a wicketkeeping option, while Shadab and Arafat can lengthen the batting without sacrificing spin.

The selectors have therefore assembled several different combinations rather than a single obvious XI.

The first Sri Lanka match should tell us which roles Pakistan are actually prioritizing.

How Strong Is Pakistan’s Bowling Without Shaheen?

Naseem Shah becomes the most established specialist fast bowler in the T20I squad.

Mohammad Salman Mirza provides left-arm pace, while Razaullah and Imran Randhawa broaden the seam options.

The greater depth appears to be in spin.

Abrar Ahmed, Shadab Khan and Sufiyan Moqim can all operate as attacking wicket-taking options, with Arafat Minhas and Saim Ayub giving Farhan additional matchup choices.

The question is how Pakistan divide overs among them on Rawalpindi surfaces that can reward pace when there is movement but can become highly batting-friendly once the ball loses hardness.

Why This Series Is More Important Than Three T20Is in October

Pakistan no longer have an imminent T20 World Cup to build toward.

That gives the selectors something they rarely seem to possess: time.

The Sri Lanka series can therefore be used to define roles rather than chase emergency tournament combinations.

Farhan needs clarity over how captaincy affects his aggressive opening game.

Samad and Hasan need stable middle-order responsibilities.

Maaz needs enough opportunity to determine whether franchise form translates internationally.

Shadab’s recent all-round resurgence needs a defined function rather than another period of role-switching.

Moqim needs to show whether his franchise wicket-taking can become a reliable international weapon.

TSE’s earlier analysis of Pakistan’s scattered franchise success argued that the national side’s hardest problem was turning individual T20 talent into coherent roles.

This Sri Lanka series is the first significant opportunity to see whether the selectors have acted on that problem.

What Happens to Agha After the Sri Lanka Series?

He remains part of Pakistan’s ODI plans.

The ODI tri-series begins on October 18 and includes England and Sri Lanka, with Shaheen continuing as captain.

Salman is in that 16-player squad alongside Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf and several players who also feature in the T20I group.

That means his Pakistan career continues immediately after the Sri Lanka T20Is.

What remains unanswered is whether he can return to the T20 side as a player and whether the captaincy change extends beyond this three-match series.

The PCB has not yet answered either question.
