Mehidy Hasan Miraz Breaks TKR’s Batting Core

Trinbago’s elimination was effectively shaped during the first innings, when Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed four of the defending champions’ most important batting pieces for only 23 runs.

Colin Munro had given TKR their most aggressive start, striking 26 from 16 balls with four fours and a six. That momentum disappeared almost instantly. Mehidy bowled Munro at 41, then removed captain Nicholas Pooran for a first-ball duck on the very next delivery.

Alex Hales reached 22 from 26 before Imran Tahir removed him, leaving TKR at 59 for three. Mehidy then returned to dismiss Jyd Goolie and Sunil Narine, reducing the defending champions to 84 for five after 14.2 overs.

Justin Greaves tried to hold the innings together with 35 from 37 balls, but Shamar Joseph removed him before he could turn the recovery into a late assault. Kieron Pollard managed only 10 from 11 and fell in the 20th over.

Why 126 Was Never Enough

The problem was not simply the number of wickets TKR lost. Their middle overs produced too little acceleration for a side playing for its season.

Munro scored at 162.50, but after his departure the innings became increasingly difficult to rebuild. Pooran made zero, Goolie four, Narine seven, Pollard 10 and Joshua Da Silva four. By the time Akeal Hosein contributed an unbeaten 12 at the end, Guyana already controlled the match.

Mehidy’s 4/23 came only days after Guyana’s bowling attack had again shown its ability to dominate high-pressure games. Imran Tahir’s recent five-wicket masterclass underlined the depth of the Warriors’ attack, and this time Mehidy became the central figure.

Shai Hope Makes Sure Guyana Finish the Job

A target of 127 still required discipline because TKR had enough experienced spin to create problems. Akeal Hosein removed Mavendra Dindyal for 19 and Usman Tariq dismissed Glenn Phillips for 11, leaving Guyana 36 for two.

Shai Hope responded with the innings Guyana needed. He avoided unnecessary risk, rotated the strike and allowed Shimron Hetmyer to attack from the other end.

The pair added 49 for the third wicket before Narine removed Hetmyer for 28 from 19 balls. Hetmyer’s three sixes ensured TKR never recovered full control of the required rate.

Hope remained unbeaten on 42 from 35, while Quentin Sampson finished the chase with an unbeaten 12. Guyana reached the target at 18.4 overs and completed another successful home result.

Hetmyer’s contribution also continued his strong 2026 record against TKR. Earlier in the tournament, he produced a record-equalling 40-ball century as Guyana beat the Knight Riders, a result that became increasingly important as TKR’s campaign unraveled.

From CPL Champions to Last Place in One Season

The scale of TKR’s decline becomes clearer when placed against September 2025. Trinbago defeated these same Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final to capture a record fifth championship. The official CPL report from that final described a side that handled pressure, squeezed opponents with spin and trusted its experienced core in decisive moments.

Twelve months later, that core could not rescue a campaign that repeatedly slipped away.

The warning signs had been visible for days. Our first TKR qualification scenario analysis showed how narrow their route had become, while the subsequent 35-run win over Barbados briefly kept their campaign alive.

The broader CPL playoff qualification map eventually reduced the equation to one unavoidable requirement: beat Guyana.

They could not.

Why TKR’s Title Defense Failed

Seven Losses Left No Margin for Recovery

A 3-7 record is the simplest explanation. Tournament qualification mathematics can become complicated when net run rate, abandoned games and late-season combinations are involved, but TKR lost 70 percent of their league matches.

Their experienced squad still produced isolated performances. Narine’s all-round display against Barbados was one of them, and TKR’s seven-wicket win over the Tridents showed what the defending champions could look like when their spin attack controlled the game.

Those performances never became a sustained run.

The Late Revival Came Too Late

TKR’s 35-run win over Barbados in their ninth league match gave them one final route into the playoffs. By then, however, Guyana had already established themselves as the strongest side in the competition, having earlier raced into the playoffs with six consecutive victories.

That meant the defending champions had to save their season against the tournament’s most consistent team, away from home, at Providence.

Guyana Beat TKR Twice When It Mattered

This was also Guyana’s second league win over Trinbago in 2026. The earlier DLS victory in Trinidad had already damaged the Knight Riders’ position. Match 33 finished the job.

The contrast between the teams became increasingly clear as the season progressed. Guyana found different match-winners, adapted to changing conditions and repeatedly defended or chased manageable totals. TKR remained dependent on experienced names finding enough individual form at the same time.

Guyana Secure First Place and Keep Building Momentum

The Warriors’ reward extends beyond eliminating the defending champions.

Guyana now have eight victories from nine matches and 16 points. Antigua & Barbuda Falcons completed their league schedule with 13 points, which means the Warriors are mathematically guaranteed to finish first regardless of their remaining league match.

The result continues a strong response after Guyana’s only defeat of the campaign, against the Falcons. Imran Tahir and Quentin Sampson quickly restored momentum in the four-wicket win over Saint Lucia, and Mehidy, Hope and Hetmyer carried that form into the TKR game.

For a side entering the playoffs as the tournament’s No. 1 team, that ability to produce different match-winners may be more important than any single dominant performance.

What TKR’s Exit Means for the Remaining CPL 2026 Playoff Race

Trinbago’s elimination removes one more team from the equation, but the race beneath Guyana and the Falcons remains important.

The Patriots are already out after their defeat to Barbados, a result The Sports Encounter covered in the Tridents-Patriots playoff race report. Jamaica, Barbados and Saint Lucia remain central to the battle for the remaining knockout positions.

Guyana, meanwhile, can prepare for the playoffs knowing they have secured the strongest league-stage record and first place. The immediate question is no longer whether they will qualify. It is whether a team that has won eight of nine league matches can convert that dominance into another CPL championship.

TSE Verdict

TKR’s elimination is significant because of where they started. This was the defending champion, the record five-time CPL winner and a squad still carrying Pooran, Narine, Pollard, Hales and Hosein.

Ten matches later, they finish seventh.

Guyana exposed the central problem one final time. Once TKR’s aggressive start disappeared, the innings lacked enough depth and momentum to put the Warriors under sustained pressure. A target of 127 gave Guyana room to absorb early wickets, and Hope’s unbeaten 42 ensured there would be no final escape for the champions.

The Knight Riders leave CPL 2026 with three wins, seven defeats and the lowest points total in the competition. Guyana leave Providence with first place secured, another controlled victory behind them and the profile of the team everyone else will have to beat in the playoffs.
