Sabah’s Night Still Belongs in Champions League History
The scoreline should not erase the scale of Sabah’s achievement in reaching Old Trafford.
The Azerbaijani club was founded only in 2017.
UEFA identified Sabah as the youngest club ever to reach the Champions League league phase or traditional group stage.
Their appearance at Old Trafford was therefore the culmination of an extraordinary qualification campaign rather than a routine European fixture.

This Was United’s First Champions League Match in Three Seasons
The occasion also carried historical weight for Manchester United.
UEFA confirmed that this is the club’s 26th Champions League campaign, an English record, but its first appearance in the competition for three seasons.
United’s previous campaign in 2023-24 ended with a group-stage elimination.
Returning with a 4-0 victory therefore provides a much cleaner beginning.
