Gulf Cup 27 Semifinals: Saudi Arabia’s Perfect Run Meets Qatar as UAE Face Oman’s Second Chance

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, October 2, 2026: Six group-stage matches have reduced Gulf Cup 27 to four teams and two very different semifinals.

Saudi Arabia arrive at October 3 with the tournament’s only perfect record, three wins from three matches and no goals conceded. Qatar have not lost either, but their route has been tighter, more patient and far less explosive.

Later in the night, the United Arab Emirates will try to turn the most productive attack of the group stage into a place in the final. Standing in their way are Oman, a team that were minutes from elimination before producing a three-goal second-half comeback against Kuwait and then surviving an extraordinary tiebreak with Iraq.

The reward is immediate. The two winners will return on October 6 to play for the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation lists the Saudi Arabia-Qatar semifinal for 6:55 p.m. local time at Alinma Stadium, while confirmation of the second semifinal places the UAE against Oman later the same evening.

Saudi Arabia reached this stage by winning Group A with nine points. The UAE won Group B on goal difference after finishing level with Qatar on seven points, while Oman took the second qualification place from Group A after one of the strangest finishes of the competition.

Why Saudi Arabia Enter the Semifinals as the Team Everyone Must Chase

No semifinalist has produced a cleaner group stage than Saudi Arabia.

The hosts opened with a 1-0 victory over Kuwait, then accelerated by beating Oman 3-0 before completing the group with a 2-0 win over Iraq.

That left Saudi Arabia with:

Goals conceded0

The most important number is not nine.

It is zero.

Saudi Arabia have not yet allowed another team to score. They have won a narrow match, controlled a three-goal victory and closed the group by beating Iraq 2-0. That progression matters because knockout football rarely gives a favorite the same type of problem twice.

The final Group A round showed how complete their position had become. Saudi Arabia no longer needed to chase qualification, yet still defeated Iraq without conceding.

Firas Al-Buraikan has already shown his finishing threat, scoring twice in the 3-0 victory over Oman, while Saudi Arabia have received goals from several different players across the tournament. That reduces Qatar’s ability to treat the semifinal as a problem that can be solved by stopping one attacker.

Can Qatar Become the First Team to Break Saudi Arabia’s Defense?

This is the central question of the first semifinal.

Qatar have also gone through Gulf Cup 27 unbeaten. They opened by beating Bahrain 2-0, defeated Yemen 1-0 and then drew 1-1 with the UAE.

Their final group record was respectable:

Qatar Group-Stage RecordFigure
Matches3
Wins2
Draws1

That record tells a different story from Saudi Arabia’s.

Qatar have rarely overwhelmed opponents. Instead, they have survived tight periods and found decisive moments.

Boualem Khoukhi and Hassan Al-Haydos delivered the goals in the 2-0 opening win over Bahrain. Yusuf Abdurisag eventually broke Yemen’s resistance in a 1-0 victory. Almoez Ali then scored against the UAE in the match that decided the final Group B order.

The 1-1 draw with the UAE may be Qatar’s most useful preparation for the semifinal because it forced them to operate against another unbeaten side with tournament momentum.

Qatar took the lead through Almoez Ali before Ali Saleh equalized for the UAE shortly before halftime. Qatar did not win the group, but they left it with only one goal conceded.

That means Saudi Arabia’s perfect defense will meet another team that has also been difficult to break down.

Where Could Saudi Arabia vs Qatar Be Decided?

The first goal could carry unusual weight.

Saudi Arabia have yet to trail in the tournament. Qatar have shown they can stay patient when matches remain level, but chasing Saudi Arabia after conceding would be a different challenge because the hosts have protected every lead they have established so far.

Qatar’s better route may be to prevent the game from becoming stretched.

Their strongest performances have come when they can control risk, keep the score close and wait for experienced players such as Almoez Ali, Khoukhi and Al-Haydos to influence decisive moments.

Saudi Arabia should want the opposite. Their 3-0 victory over Oman showed what can happen when their attacking movement creates repeated pressure rather than a single isolated chance.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation’s official tournament page confirms the hosts reached the semifinal with three wins, six goals and a +6 goal difference.

Why the UAE Have Looked Like Gulf Cup 27’s Most Dangerous Attacking Team

If Saudi Arabia have built the cleanest tournament resume, the UAE have produced the most explosive attacking one.

Zlatko Dalić’s side opened with a 4-0 demolition of Yemen. Nicolás Giménez scored twice during a 25-minute attacking surge that turned a competitive opening into a rout.

The UAE then beat defending champions Bahrain 3-0.

By the time they met Qatar, qualification was already secure. Their 1-1 draw gave them first place because the seven goals accumulated across the opening two rounds had created a superior goal difference.

The UAE and Qatar had already sealed their semifinal places after two matches, but the Emiratis’ scoring margin gave them the advantage when the teams finally drew.

Giménez has supplied penetration, Luan Pereira contributed against Yemen, and Ali Saleh’s equalizer against Qatar provided another reminder that the UAE are not dependent on one route to goal.

The challenge changes now.

Group-stage goal difference no longer matters. One poor half can end the tournament.

Oman Reached the Semifinals the Hardest Way Possible

No semifinalist has had a stranger route than Oman.

They began by recovering from a goal down to draw Iraq 1-1, with Nasser Al-Rawahi scoring the equalizer in the opening Group A contest.

Saudi Arabia then beat Oman 3-0.

That left Tarik Sektioui’s side facing elimination against Kuwait.

The situation became worse when Kuwait scored early. Oman went into halftime trailing 1-0 and knowing their tournament was slipping away.

Then Al-Rawahi changed it.

He equalized in the second half, scored again to put Oman ahead and then helped create the third goal as Musab Al-Shaqsi completed a 3-1 comeback.

Even that was not enough to settle qualification normally.

Oman and Iraq finished level on four points, level on goals scored, level on goals conceded and, after the final disciplinary calculations, could not be separated through the applicable competitive criteria. Drawing lots eventually sent Oman into the semifinals.

That extraordinary finish formed the second half of TSE’s Group A finale coverage.

Oman therefore enter the semifinal with numbers that look considerably weaker than the UAE’s:

Oman Group-Stage RecordFigure
Matches3
Wins1
Draws1
Defeats1
Goals scored4
Goals conceded5
Points4

Yet those figures also make Oman dangerous in a different way.

They have already played what felt like an elimination match. They have already trailed with their tournament disappearing. They have already recovered.

The UAE have been the more convincing team. Oman may be the team more familiar with desperation.

Nasser Al-Rawahi Is the Player the UAE Cannot Allow to Take Over

Al-Rawahi has become the clearest attacking reference point in Oman’s tournament.

He scored the equalizer against Iraq and then struck twice against Kuwait during the comeback that kept Oman alive.

His influence against Kuwait extended beyond finishing. Once Oman began attacking with greater numbers and urgency, Al-Rawahi became central to the spaces and deliveries that transformed the match.

The semifinal therefore creates a direct tactical problem for the UAE.

Dalić’s team have conceded only once in three matches. Oman need Al-Rawahi to become the player who tests whether that defensive record can survive knockout pressure.

Oman’s 3-1 comeback and qualification drama have also given them a psychological reset. A team that had appeared close to elimination enters October 3 with another 90 minutes to reach a final.

Can Oman Survive If the UAE Score First?

This may be the decisive question of the second semifinal.

Oman proved against Kuwait that they can recover from a deficit.

But recovering against the UAE is likely to be much more difficult.

The Emiratis scored eight times in Group B and conceded only once. They can attack through different players, and their strongest periods have produced goals in clusters rather than isolated moments.

Against Yemen, four goals arrived between the 26th and 51st minutes. Against Bahrain, another three-goal performance followed.

If Oman allow the semifinal to enter one of those UAE surges, they may not receive the recovery window Kuwait gave them.

The smarter route is likely to involve staying compact early, preventing Giménez and the UAE’s runners from attacking open spaces and forcing the match to remain uncomfortable deep into the second half.

The Emirates News Agency confirmed the UAE’s first-place Group B finish after the 1-1 draw with Qatar, while Qatar Olympic Committee reporting confirmed the completed semifinal bracket.

How the Four Gulf Cup 27 Semifinalists Compare

TeamPWDLGFGAPts
Saudi Arabia3300609
United Arab Emirates3210817
Qatar3210417
Oman3111454

The table creates two obvious favorites.

Saudi Arabia have won every match without conceding. The UAE have scored more goals than any of the four semifinalists and have also allowed only one.

Knockout football makes those advantages important, not conclusive.

Qatar have also lost none of their three matches and conceded once. Oman have already demonstrated how quickly their tournament can change when Al-Rawahi and the attack find momentum.

Which Players Could Decide the Gulf Cup 27 Semifinals?

Firas Al-Buraikan, Saudi Arabia

Al-Buraikan’s two goals against Oman demonstrated how quickly Saudi Arabia can turn territorial control into separation on the scoreboard. Qatar cannot afford to give him repeated access to dangerous areas.

Almoez Ali, Qatar

Almoez scored against the UAE and remains one of Qatar’s most experienced attacking figures. Qatar may receive fewer opportunities against Saudi Arabia than they did in the group stage, increasing the value of his movement and finishing.

Nicolás Giménez, United Arab Emirates

Giménez’s brace against Yemen helped establish the UAE as the tournament’s most productive attacking side during the group phase. Oman must prevent him from turning a short spell of pressure into multiple goals.

Nasser Al-Rawahi, Oman

Oman’s semifinal run would almost certainly not exist without Al-Rawahi. He scored against Iraq and struck twice during the comeback against Kuwait. He enters the semifinal as the player most capable of changing Oman’s attacking ceiling.

What Happens After the Gulf Cup 27 Semifinals?

There is no second leg and no group-stage safety net remaining.

The winners advance directly to the Gulf Cup 27 final on October 6 in Jeddah.

That creates four possible finals:

  • Saudi Arabia vs United Arab Emirates
  • Saudi Arabia vs Oman
  • Qatar vs United Arab Emirates
  • Qatar vs Oman

A Saudi Arabia-Oman final would produce a rematch after the hosts beat Oman 3-0 in the group stage.

A Qatar-UAE final would recreate the 1-1 Group B meeting that decided first place only three days before the semifinals.

The tournament therefore carries the possibility of either a new matchup or an immediate chance for revenge.

Gulf Cup 27 Semifinal Prediction: What Should We Expect?

Saudi Arabia deserve to enter the first semifinal as favorites because no opponent has yet scored against them and no team took a point from them in Group A.

Qatar’s defensive record means the match may be much tighter than Saudi Arabia’s perfect record suggests. If Qatar keep the score level into the second half, their experience in close matches becomes increasingly relevant.

The UAE also hold the stronger statistical case against Oman. Eight goals scored and one conceded is difficult to ignore.

Oman, however, have already survived the tournament’s most severe pressure. Their route to the semifinals was chaotic, but the comeback against Kuwait showed a team capable of responding when there is no alternative left.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE enter October 3 with the stronger group-stage evidence.

Qatar and Oman arrive with something else to prove: that knockout football can overturn the hierarchy created during the first three matches.
