Saudi Arabia celebrate a 2-0 win over Iraq as Oman beat Kuwait 3-1 and force a Gulf Cup 27 Group A fair-play tiebreak

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, September 29, 2026: Saudi Arabia completed a perfect Gulf Cup 27 group stage on Tuesday. Behind them, Iraq and Oman finished in almost perfect statistical deadlock.

The hosts beat Iraq 2-0 while Oman defeated Kuwait 3-1 in the two simultaneous Group A finales, leaving Saudi Arabia alone at the top with nine points from three matches, six goals scored and none conceded.

The second semifinal place is considerably more complicated.

Iraq and Oman both finish with four points. Both have scored four goals and conceded five. Both therefore have a goal difference of minus one. Their head-to-head meeting ended 1-1.

THE BIG PICTURE

What Is the Final Gulf Cup 27 Group A Table?

Iraq and Oman are shown jointly in the second/third-place positions pending the competition’s final fair-play tiebreak confirmation.

Why Does Saudi Arabia’s Perfect Group Stage Matter?

Saudi Arabia had already secured semifinal qualification before facing Iraq.

How Did Iraq Go From Near Qualification to a Tiebreak?

Iraq entered the last round in the stronger position.

How Did Oman Recover From a 3-0 Defeat to Reach Four Points?

Oman’s position after Matchday 2 looked precarious.

Why Are Iraq and Oman Still Level After So Many Tiebreakers?

The published Gulf Cup 27 standings rules apply the relevant criteria in this order:

That means points cannot separate them. Neither can their head-to-head result, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, overall goal difference or overall goals scored.

Under the published Gulf Cup 27 tiebreak order, the qualification decision therefore moves to fair play.

Until the tournament publishes the complete final disciplinary calculation, The Sports Encounter will not declare either Iraq or Oman as the confirmed Group A runner-up.

The extraordinary finish completes a group that had been finely balanced from opening night, when Iraq let an early lead slip in a 1-1 draw with Oman. That point has now become the result connecting both teams in every layer of the qualification equation.

Why Does Saudi Arabia’s Perfect Group Stage Matter?

Saudi Arabia had already secured semifinal qualification before facing Iraq.

They could still have treated the final group match as little more than preparation for the knockout stage.

Instead, the hosts finished with their strongest statistical statement of the tournament so far: three wins, nine points, six goals scored and no goals conceded.

The sequence matters.

Saudi Arabia opened with a narrow victory over Kuwait, then produced a far more convincing 3-0 performance against Oman to become the first Group A team to secure a semifinal place.

The Sports Encounter’s soccer coverage has followed the wider regional tournament picture throughout the opening week, and Saudi Arabia’s defensive record now separates them from almost every other contender.

Iraq represented the final test before the knockout stage. Graham Arnold’s team had four points, had scored three times against Kuwait and still had a route to first place.

Saudi Arabia removed that possibility with a 2-0 win.

The result means the hosts reach the semifinals without having trailed on the table after any completed round and without allowing an opponent to score.

How Did Iraq Go From Near Qualification to a Tiebreak?

Iraq entered the last round in the stronger position.

Their opening 1-1 draw against Oman had been followed by a dramatic 3-2 victory over Kuwait, taking them to four points.

Oman had only one.

A draw against Saudi Arabia would therefore have taken the calculation away from Oman completely.

Instead, Iraq lost 2-0 while Oman scored three against Kuwait.

That combination erased Iraq’s three-point advantage in one evening.

The cruelest part from Iraq’s perspective is how little separates the teams after three games.

The stoppage-time winner that gave Iraq three points against Kuwait looked potentially decisive on Matchday 2. The result kept them in control of their own qualification position and left Oman needing both a victory and Saudi help.

Saudi Arabia supplied the result Oman needed.

Oman supplied the goals themselves.

How Did Oman Recover From a 3-0 Defeat to Reach Four Points?

Oman’s position after Matchday 2 looked precarious.

They had taken one point from Iraq but were then beaten 3-0 by Saudi Arabia, leaving them with one point, one goal scored and four conceded.

Qualification required two things on the final night: Oman had to beat Kuwait and Iraq had to lose.

Both happened.

Oman’s 3-1 victory transformed their tournament totals from one goal scored and a minus-three goal difference to four goals scored and minus one.

That improvement was just enough to pull them exactly level with Iraq on the basic overall numbers.

The result also changes the meaning of their opening draw. Nasser Al-Rawahi’s equalizer against Iraq had looked like a useful recovery at the time. It is now the reason Iraq cannot use the direct meeting to separate themselves from Oman.

That first match was already one of the most revealing games in the group, as TSE’s Iraq-Oman analysis showed when Oman improved sharply after halftime and punished Iraq for failing to extend an early lead.

Why Are Iraq and Oman Still Level After So Many Tiebreakers?

The published Gulf Cup 27 standings rules apply the relevant criteria in this order:

  1. Total points
  2. Points in the head-to-head match
  3. Head-to-head goal difference
  4. Head-to-head goals scored
  5. Overall goal difference
  6. Overall goals scored
  7. Fair play

This is why simply looking at the final table is not enough to identify the second semifinalist.

Official confirmation of the disciplinary totals is required.

Why TSE Is Not Declaring Iraq or Oman Qualified Yet

Breaking tournament coverage becomes unreliable when a qualification scenario is treated as settled before the decisive tiebreak information is available.

The football numbers are clear. The final fair-play calculation is not yet sufficiently verified from an official post-match source.

For that reason, this report records Saudi Arabia as the confirmed Group A winner and treats Iraq and Oman as tied for the second semifinal position until the competition publishes the final classification.

That distinction matters because the Gulf Football Federation’s official tournament format sends the Group A winner against the Group B runner-up and the Group B winner against the Group A runner-up.

What Happened to Kuwait in Gulf Cup 27?

Kuwait finish Group A without a point.

The record champions lost all three matches, but the table alone does not fully describe their campaign.

They lost narrowly in the opening round and then pushed Iraq into one of the most dramatic finishes of the group stage, scoring twice before Iraq found a stoppage-time winner.

By the time Kuwait met Oman, elimination had already been confirmed.

The 3-1 defeat leaves them with three goals scored and seven conceded across three games.

The wider Gulf competition has produced a sharp contrast between teams building momentum and those struggling to turn competitive spells into results. TSE’s analysis of the expanded Gulf Champions League also shows how frequently Saudi, Iraqi, Omani, Kuwaiti, Qatari and UAE teams are now being measured directly against one another at club as well as national-team level.

Who Could Saudi Arabia Face in the Gulf Cup 27 Semifinal?

Saudi Arabia are confirmed as Group A winners.

Their semifinal opponent will therefore be the Group B runner-up.

That opponent will be either the United Arab Emirates or Qatar.

Both had already secured semifinal places after two victories from their opening two games. The UAE reached six points after following their 4-0 opening win over Yemen with a 3-0 victory over defending champions Bahrain.

Qatar also reached six points after beginning with a 2-0 victory over Bahrain and then beating Yemen 1-0.

That left the two semifinalists facing each other on September 30 to decide the final Group B order.

TSE’s Group B qualification report explains why the UAE enter that final group match with the stronger goal difference but why first place is still directly at stake.

What Are the Gulf Cup 27 Semifinal Matchups?

The tournament bracket crosses the two groups.

Saudi Arabia therefore know their route but not yet their opponent.

The unresolved Iraq-Oman tiebreak means the Group B winner must also wait to discover whether it will face Iraq or Oman.

When Are the Gulf Cup 27 Semifinals and Final?

The semifinals are scheduled for October 3, with the final on October 6 in Jeddah, according to the Gulf Football Federation tournament schedule.

The next 24 hours will therefore settle both halves of the knockout bracket.

Saudi Arabia have removed every uncertainty of their own. They are first, unbeaten and yet to concede.

For Iraq and Oman, the final question is no longer about goals.

It is about discipline.
