Guirassy Gives Guinea the Win They Could Not Afford to Miss Against Kenya

Serhou Guirassy’s 32nd-minute goal gave Guinea a vital 1-0 win over Kenya in Conakry, reviving the Syli National’s challenge in a Group D race where only one non-host nation can reach AFCON 2027.

Serhou Guirassy celebrates Guinea’s winning goal against Kenya in their AFCON 2027 qualifier in Conakry

CONAKRY, Guinea, October 1, 2026: Serhou Guirassy needed one clean moment to change Guinea’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Borussia Dortmund striker scored in the 32nd minute as Guinea defeated Kenya 1-0 at Stade du 28 Septembre, turning a match Guinea could scarcely afford to waste into three points that keep the Syli National alive in one of AFCON 2027 qualifying’s most unforgiving groups.

The scoreline was narrow. Its value was not.

Guinea had opened Group D with a 2-1 defeat in South Africa. Another failure to win would have left Paulo Duarte’s side dangerously far behind a Bafana Bafana team that followed its opening victory by thrashing Eritrea 5-0.

Guirassy prevented that scenario.

Kenya, meanwhile, leave Conakry without a win from their opening two qualifiers after following a 1-1 draw against Eritrea with this defeat. The competitive consequences are different for Benni McCarthy’s side because Kenya are already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as one of the three co-hosts.

For Guinea, every point still has to be earned.

Guirassy Turns Guinea’s Pressure Into the Only Goal That Matters

Guinea had more reason to force the game.

They had started qualification by losing 2-1 to South Africa despite Seydouba Cissé scoring an equalizer in Soweto. Samukele Kabini’s 77th-minute winner denied Guinea what would have been a valuable away point and immediately placed Duarte’s side under pressure.

That opening result was one of the major Group D developments in The Sports Encounter’s Matchday 1 review of the AFCON qualifying race.

Against Kenya, Guinea responded by taking greater control of the ball and generating the clearer attacking threat.

The decisive moment arrived after 32 minutes.

Guirassy found the breakthrough and beat Byrne Odhiambo to give Guinea the lead. It was the striker’s first goal of the current qualifying campaign and exactly the contribution Guinea needed from the most established finisher in Duarte’s squad.

CAF had identified Guirassy as the central figure in Guinea’s attack before the international window, naming him among the leading options in a squad that also included Aliou Baldé, Aguibou Camara and Yadaly Diaby.

Once ahead, Guinea did not need another goal. They needed control.

Why Guinea’s 1-0 Win Matters More Than an Ordinary Three Points

Group D does not work like most AFCON qualifying groups.

Kenya are one of the three co-hosts of the 2027 tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda. Their place at the finals is therefore guaranteed regardless of where they finish in qualifying.

That changes the mathematics for everybody else.

Only the highest-placed team among South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea can qualify from Group D alongside Kenya.

CAF’s official AFCON 2027 qualification rules confirm the exception for groups containing one of the three host nations.

The same structure has already influenced other sections of qualifying. The Sports Encounter examined how the host-country exception affects teams across Groups D, H and L in its AFCON Friday qualifying report.

Seen through that structure, Guinea’s victory becomes considerably more important.

They are not merely trying to finish in the top two.

They have to finish above South Africa and Eritrea.

South Africa Still Hold the Advantage in the Group D Race

Guinea have repaired some of the damage from their opening defeat, but South Africa remain in the stronger position.

Bafana Bafana followed their 2-1 home victory over Guinea by beating Eritrea 5-0, moving onto six points from their first two matches.

That three-point gap makes Guinea’s recovery significant without making their position comfortable.

The opening defeat in Soweto still matters because direct games between Guinea and South Africa carry disproportionate weight in a group where there is effectively only one available qualification place.

The Sports Encounter’s earlier analysis of South Africa’s opening advantage identified precisely why Kabini’s winner against Guinea had such large table value.

Guirassy’s goal against Kenya has now prevented that gap from becoming even more damaging.

Kenya Again Struggle to Turn Possession Into a Goal

Kenya’s qualification status should not make the performance irrelevant.

The 2027 co-hosts are using these matches as competitive preparation for a tournament they will stage next summer, and the opening two games have exposed a problem Benni McCarthy will want to address.

Kenya needed Ryan Ogam’s 87th-minute equalizer to rescue a 1-1 draw at home to Eritrea on Matchday 1.

Against Guinea, they did not find an equalizer at all.

Available match data shows Kenya were unable to consistently turn their possession into high-quality shooting opportunities, while Guinea produced the more dangerous attempts and forced goalkeeper Byrne Odhiambo into saves.

Guinea’s advantage was not overwhelming territorially, but the difference in attacking consequence was significant.

Guirassy put one of Guinea’s opportunities away.

Kenya never found the equivalent response.

Why Kenya’s Results Still Matter Despite Automatic Qualification

There is no qualification panic for Kenya.

There is still preparation pressure.

AFCON 2027 will be staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027. Competitive international games provide McCarthy with opportunities that friendlies cannot fully reproduce: hostile away conditions, match pressure and opponents with something tangible at stake.

CAF’s official Matchday 1 and 2 schedule confirms Kenya’s automatic qualification while explaining that the remaining teams in Group D must fight for the additional finals place.

Two matches have now produced one goal, one point and no victory for Kenya.

That is not a qualification crisis.

It is still useful evidence for a team being prepared to compete on home soil next year.

Guirassy Delivers the Response Guinea Built Their Window Around

Guinea’s squad selection made clear where much of the attacking responsibility would sit.

Guirassy returned for the opening qualifiers as the biggest name among Duarte’s forward options. CAF’s Guinea squad announcement specifically highlighted the Borussia Dortmund forward before the South Africa and Kenya matches.

The first game did not give Guinea the result they needed.

The second did.

That distinction matters for a team whose margin for error is unusually narrow.

Guirassy did not need a brace, a hat trick or a spectacular statistical performance.

He needed one goal that changed three columns at once: Guinea’s wins, Guinea’s points and Guinea’s position in the qualifying race.

What Changed Between Guinea’s First Two Qualifiers?

The most important change was the result, but there was also a different game state.

Against South Africa, Guinea had to respond after conceding and then suffered a second decisive blow late in the game.

Against Kenya, Guinea scored first.

That allowed Duarte’s side to manage the match from a stronger position rather than chase it.

The distinction is important because Guinea’s task across six qualifying matches is not simply to accumulate attractive performances. They need enough points to finish above two direct rivals for one available place.

The opening rounds across Africa have already shown how quickly that pressure can build. TSE’s latest wider AFCON qualifying review showed several established nations facing early table pressure after unexpected results.

Guinea avoided joining that group of teams with serious early damage.

Can Guinea Still Qualify for AFCON 2027?

Yes.

More importantly, the path is now much healthier than it would have been after a draw or defeat against Kenya.

South Africa have six points and Guinea have three after two games. Four rounds remain, including further direct games involving the teams competing for Group D’s one available non-host qualification place.

The qualifiers resume during the November 9-17 international window before the final two rounds are staged in March 2027.

Guinea therefore have time.

They do not have much room for another wasted opportunity.

The broader competition has already produced several dramatic swings, from Zimbabwe’s comeback on the opening AFCON qualifying night to Guinea-Bissau’s surprise result against Nigeria in TSE’s Matchday 2 roundup.

A six-match campaign leaves enough time to recover.

It also makes every missed point increasingly expensive.

What Does the Result Mean for Kenya?

Kenya remain guaranteed participants at AFCON 2027.

The question for McCarthy is therefore less about qualification and more about development.

Can Kenya create enough against organized defenses?

Can they turn competitive possession into chances?

Can their forward line become more dependable before the tournament arrives?

The first two qualifiers have not answered those questions positively.

Ogam rescued the point against Eritrea. Guinea prevented the same escape in Conakry.

Kenya’s presence at AFCON 2027 is secure.

The level they will bring to it remains a work in progress.

What Happens Next in AFCON 2027 Qualifying?

Matchdays 3 and 4 will take place during the November international window, from November 9 to 17.

Those rounds should tell us considerably more about whether Guinea can convert this recovery into a sustained challenge to South Africa.

CAF has structured qualifying across six matchdays, with the final two rounds scheduled for March 22-30, 2027.

For Guinea, the equation is already becoming clear.

They cannot control South Africa’s results.

They can make sure South Africa are never allowed to relax.

Guirassy’s winner against Kenya did exactly that.
