BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, September 12, 2026: Gudakesh Motie turned the final over at Kensington Oval into six balls of controlled chaos as Barbados Tridents chased 151 from the last delivery to beat Jamaica Kingsmen by two wickets and secure their place in the Caribbean Premier League 2026 playoffs.
Barbados needed 17 from the final over with eight wickets down and their chase apparently slipping away. Motie responded by cutting Odean Smith’s first legal delivery for four, watched Smith send down two wides, and then launched the next legal ball over long-off for six.
The equation, which had looked heavily favorable to Jamaica only moments earlier, collapsed to five required from four balls. AM Ghazanfar contributed three crucial runs, the scores were level with one ball remaining, and Motie completed the chase with the winning single to finish unbeaten on 17 from eight deliveries.
The result did more than produce one of the most dramatic finishes of Republic Bank CPL 2026. It completed the playoff field.
Barbados moved to 10 points and secured third place, while Jamaica still qualified in fourth despite the defeat because their net run rate of -0.085 remained well ahead of St Lucia Kings’ -0.887. Guyana Amazon Warriors and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons had already secured the first two positions.
That leaves the final league match between Guyana and Barbados with no qualification consequences. The identity and order of the four playoff teams are now settled.

Motie Turns an Almost Lost Chase Into a Playoff Celebration
The final score makes this look like an ordinary close chase. The last three overs tell a very different story.
Barbados had already lost Descarte, who had carried the innings almost alone through its most difficult period. Daniel Sams then departed for five from six balls, and captain Chris Green was caught for 17 from 12 in the penultimate over.
That wicket left Barbados 134/8 after 18.5 overs.
Jamaica were one disciplined over away from victory.
Instead, Motie changed the entire atmosphere at Kensington Oval.
Smith began the 20th over with width outside off and Motie carved it over point for four. Two consecutive wides followed. Smith then overpitched, and Motie sent him straight over long-off for six.
Barbados had collected 12 runs while only two legal deliveries had disappeared.
The pressure that had rested entirely on the chasing side was suddenly Jamaica’s problem.
Motie’s late intervention also continued an unusual theme in Barbados’ season. Earlier in the competition, he had already played a decisive role with the ball when Motie and Sherfane Rutherford helped Barbados defeat St Lucia Kings. This time, his most valuable work came with the bat.
Descarte Gave Barbados a Chance When Almost Nobody Else Could
The drama of the final over should not obscure the innings that made it possible.
Barbados were 33/3 after 5.2 overs. Brandon King had gone for 18, Zachary Carter for three and Rivaldo Clarke for one. Quinton de Kock followed for 14 at 63/4.
Descarte was left managing both the scoreboard and a steadily shrinking supply of recognized batting support.
He reached his fifty from 36 balls with six fours and two sixes and eventually made 56 from 42, scoring at 133.33 while wickets repeatedly disappeared around him.
Sherfane Rutherford managed five from 10 balls. Green initially struggled to create scoring options. Sams, selected partly for his late-order power, produced only five from six.
Descarte therefore spent much of his innings performing two jobs: preventing another collapse and keeping the required rate within reach.
His dismissal at 107/6 in the 17th over appeared to remove Barbados’ last established route to victory.
It also created the conditions for Motie’s intervention.
The Tridents have experienced both sides of high-pressure run chases this season. They conceded a huge pursuit when St Kitts and Nevis Patriots chased 218 against Barbados, while their first meeting with Jamaica ended with Barbados surviving Andre Russell’s extraordinary late assault in another five-run thriller.
Saturday night produced the reverse experience. This time Barbados were the team stealing the game at the finish.
Jamaica Leave Runs Behind After Maaz Sadaqat’s Strong Start
Jamaica’s 150/9 contained enough batting contributions to remain competitive, but not enough sustained partnerships to create a total that placed the chase beyond one late burst.
Maaz Sadaqat supplied the strongest innings with 47 from 34 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes.
Usman Khan made 18 from 17, while Hassan Khan contributed 16 from 12 and Keacy Carty accelerated with 15 from seven. Andre Russell threatened briefly with 10 from four deliveries.
Rovman Powell and Keemo Paul, however, struggled for tempo. Powell made eight from 12, while Paul scored five from 12.
Barbados kept finding wickets whenever Jamaica threatened to build momentum.
Motie was exceptional with 2/7 from three overs, including 12 dot balls. Jakeem Pollard took three wickets despite conceding 38, while Sams claimed two.
Motie’s bowling figures make his later batting contribution even more important. He influenced both innings materially, first removing Sadaqat and Usman Khan before delivering the decisive runs at the end of the chase.
Jamaica Were Six Balls From Victory and Could Not Close the Match
The uncomfortable question for Jamaica will center on the final over.
With 17 runs to defend, the bowling side still held a substantial advantage. Motie was dangerous enough to demand respect, but Barbados had only Ghazanfar and Jakeem Pollard remaining behind him.
Smith’s opening boundary ball immediately reduced the protection around Jamaica’s total. The two wides were more damaging because they conceded runs without consuming legal deliveries.
His next mistake was even more expensive. Motie received a ball in his hitting arc and launched it for six.
Suddenly, a 17-run defense had become a five-run defense with four legal balls still available.
Jamaica had previously shown an ability to survive uncomfortable finishes. Saim Ayub’s century helped them survive a late Patriots charge, while Keemo Paul produced a major all-round performance in their 51-run win over St Kitts and Nevis.
This time, the closing execution deserted them.
The consolation is significant: the defeat did not eliminate Jamaica.

Saturday’s result removed the final qualification uncertainty from the league stage.
Guyana Amazon Warriors finish first, Antigua and Barbuda Falcons second, Barbados Tridents third and Jamaica Kingsmen fourth.
Barbados still have one league game remaining against Guyana, but even a victory would take the Tridents only to 12 points, one short of Antigua’s 13. Guyana cannot be displaced from first place, while Jamaica have completed their schedule.
The final regular-season fixture therefore becomes a game for preparation, rhythm and individual form rather than playoff qualification or seeding.
For Barbados, that is a luxury they earned in the most stressful possible way.
