BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, September 10, 2026: Daniel Sams did not bother with the tension, the permutations or the arithmetic. With Barbados Tridents five runs from victory and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots clinging to their CPL 2026 season, the Australian all-rounder flat-batted the ball over long-off and ended the argument with one swing.
Barbados reached 120 for six in 18 overs to chase down 119 at Kensington Oval, win by four wickets and send the Patriots out of the tournament. St Kitts and Nevis became the first side mathematically eliminated from CPL 2026, while the Tridents moved to eight points from eight matches and turned the battle for the final two playoff positions into an even more complicated finish.
The winning six provided the photograph. The match itself had been shaped much earlier by Chris Green’s 4 for 20, Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 44 and a Barbados attack that reduced the Patriots to 51 for six before Wanindu Hasaranga dragged them toward respectability.
What looked like a routine chase at the innings break became anything but that after Jason Holder removed Brandon King and Rivaldo Clarke in the opening over. Barbados fell to 4 for two and later 27 for three, but de Kock refused to let the required rate or the collapsing wickets dictate his tempo.
The Tridents eventually found the calm that the Patriots could not.

Chris Green Tore Through the Patriots Before They Could Settle
Barbados captain Chris Green elected to bowl and then personally made sure the decision mattered.
Johnson Charles was bowled for a duck from the second delivery of the match. Kyle Mayers also failed to score. Andre Fletcher made four before Green removed him, and when Alick Athanaze departed for 16, the Patriots were 27 for four inside seven overs.
The collapse worsened.
Dasun Shanaka made six from 14 balls before Green trapped him lbw. Jason Holder followed for 24, leaving St Kitts and Nevis 51 for six after 11.2 overs.
Green finished with 4 for 20 from four overs, including a maiden and 17 dot balls. Daniel Sams supported him with 2 for 21, while Gudakesh Motie took 2 for 30.
It was precisely the kind of strangulation Barbados needed after their eight-wicket victory over St Lucia Kings had revived their playoff hopes.
Wanindu Hasaranga Refused to Let the Patriots Disappear Quietly
At 51 for six, the Patriots were heading toward a total that might not even have required a complicated chase.
Hasaranga changed that.
He attacked immediately, using the sweep, slog-sweep and his ability to hit straight against the slower bowlers. His 45 from 25 balls included four fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 180.
The innings was especially important because almost nobody else around him could score freely. Holder’s 24 came from 27 deliveries. Navin Bidaisee made six from 15. Naseem Shah was bowled for a first-ball duck.
Hasaranga pushed the total beyond 100 before being run out at 110 for nine in the 18.4th over. Jeremiah Louis added 12 from eight balls before the Patriots were dismissed for 118 from the final delivery of the innings.
For a team playing for its season, 118 never looked enough. The pitch, however, ensured Barbados would still have to earn the chase.

Jason Holder Made 119 Look Much Larger
The Patriots needed immediate wickets and Holder delivered exactly that.
Brandon King edged behind for a duck from his third delivery. Rivaldo Clarke attacked his first ball for four but was caught behind before the opening over was complete.
Zachary Carter then fell for 13, also to Holder, and Barbados were 27 for three after five overs.
The chase had suddenly become uncomfortable.
It also brought back memories of the Patriots’ earlier meeting with Barbados, when Johnson Charles had led St Kitts and Nevis through a huge 218-run chase. This time, however, Barbados had a batter willing to absorb the pressure rather than chase the game.
Quinton de Kock Won the Chase by Refusing to Panic
De Kock’s unbeaten 44 from 43 balls will not appear among the tournament’s most explosive innings.
It may prove one of Barbados’ most valuable.
He walked in with the score at 4 for two and remained there when Sams hit the winning six 17 overs later.
Shadrack Descarte contributed 19 from 18 balls in a 38-run partnership that steadied the innings. Sherfane Rutherford then supplied the acceleration with 23 from 17, taking Barbados from 65 for four toward the finishing line.
Naseem Shah gave the Patriots one final opening. He dismissed Descarte and later Green while conceding only 11 runs from four overs.
Waqar Salamkheil also bowled economically, taking 1 for 19.
But de Kock stayed.
That became the difference between another Barbados collapse and a season-extending victory.

Daniel Sams Finished What He Had Helped Start
Sams had already played an important role with the ball, removing Mayers and Bidaisee as the Patriots struggled to build an innings.
He then arrived at 109 for six with Barbados requiring 10 more runs.

What Barbados’ Win Does to the Playoff Race
The most important consequence is that Barbados now control much more of their own fate.
The Tridents have two matches remaining, first against Jamaica Kingsmen and then against Guyana Amazon Warriors. The official Cricket West Indies CPL fixture list confirms those are the final two matches of the league stage after Guyana face TKR.
A Barbados win over Jamaica would take the Tridents to 10 points and guarantee that they finish above St Lucia and the eliminated Patriots. It would also leave Jamaica on eight points and put enormous weight on net run rate depending on what TKR do against Guyana.
If Jamaica beat Barbados, the Kingsmen will reach 10 points and put themselves in an extremely strong position to qualify. Barbados would still have the final league match against Guyana to respond.
This makes Saturday’s Barbados-Jamaica contest effectively a playoff game before the playoffs begin.

TKR Now Have No Margin Left
Trinbago Knight Riders remain alive on six points, but their equation has become brutally simple.
They have one match remaining, against Guyana.
A defeat leaves TKR on six points and eliminates them. A victory takes them to eight, creating the possibility of a multi-team net-run-rate decision.
The Sports Encounter has been following that increasingly narrow route since asking whether TKR could still rescue their title defense.
The irony is that TKR currently possess a better net run rate than Jamaica, Barbados and St Lucia. But they first have to beat a Guyana side that has won seven of eight matches.

St Lucia Are Still Alive, but They Can Only Watch
St Lucia have completed all 10 matches and remain on eight points with a net run rate of -0.887.
They cannot improve their position themselves.
Their remaining hope depends on results elsewhere keeping at least one of Barbados, Jamaica or TKR within range and then creating a net-run-rate comparison that falls their way.

The Patriots’ Season Ends Where Their Biggest Problem Began
St Kitts and Nevis produced some extraordinary individual moments during CPL 2026.
Shanaka’s explosive batting briefly transformed their season, including the record-breaking hundred that demolished St Lucia.
They also showed what their batting could do when Charles led the 218 chase against Barbados.
Yet the Patriots never found enough consistency between those peaks.
Their final match captured the contradiction perfectly.
Hasaranga played a brilliant rescue innings. Holder then ripped through the Barbados top order. Naseem conceded only 11 runs from four overs.
Those performances gave them every chance to survive.
