Charlotte Hornets celebrate a 110-103 win over the Brooklyn Nets in the 2026-27 NBA season opener.

BROOKLYN, United States, October 21, 2026: Charlotte did not need one overwhelming individual performance to open its season with a road win. The Hornets instead leaned on balance, control and enough late execution to withstand Julius Randle’s 33-point night and beat the Brooklyn Nets 110-103 at Barclays Center.

Grayson Allen led Charlotte with 21 points, while Naz Reid supplied one of the most complete performances of the night with 11 rebounds and seven assists. Brooklyn had the game’s leading scorer in Randle, but the Nets never converted that individual production into enough collective offense to erase Charlotte’s advantage.

Charlotte’s balance mattered more than a single scoring eruption

The Hornets carried a 54-48 lead into halftime and still held a five-point edge after Brooklyn won the third quarter 33-32. That meant the game remained open entering the fourth, but Charlotte limited the Nets to 22 points in the closing period and protected the result.

Allen’s 21 points gave Charlotte its leading scorer, but Reid’s all-around impact was just as important. His 11 rebounds helped stabilize possessions and his seven assists gave the Hornets another playmaking outlet. Moussa Diabate added defensive disruption with five steals, while Ryan Kalkbrenner contributed two blocks.

The result is an early example of why depth could matter so much for Charlotte this season. In a conference where many teams are relying heavily on one or two primary creators, the Hornets were able to win despite not having the game’s leading scorer.

Julius Randle gave Brooklyn a chance

Randle scored 33 points and also matched Reid with seven assists, keeping Brooklyn within striking distance throughout the night. The Nets were six points behind at halftime and five behind entering the fourth, so this was not a game that slipped away early.

The problem was that Brooklyn could not generate enough support around its most productive scorer during the final stretch. Charlotte’s defense tightened in the fourth and the Nets finished seven points short despite Randle’s scoring load.

That distinction matters more than the raw total. A 33-point night can keep a team competitive, but season-long progress will depend on whether Brooklyn can create more efficient secondary offense when defenses begin loading up on its primary option.

What the opener says about both teams

Charlotte’s first win does not prove that the Hornets have solved every offensive problem, but it does show a useful blueprint. They did not rely on a single star to carry the scoring burden, they created secondary playmaking and they closed the game with better defensive execution than Brooklyn.

For the Nets, Randle’s production is encouraging, but the closing minutes underline the need for more support when a game tightens. Brooklyn scored 22 points in the fourth, its lowest-scoring period of the night.
