COMO, Italy, October 21, 2026: Nico Paz produced a dazzling two-goal performance as Como demolished Manchester United 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, deepening the crisis surrounding Michael Carrick’s struggling side. Nearly 900 kilometers away in northern France, Galatasaray recovered from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Lille 4-2, with Victor Osimhen completing a remarkable turnaround. The two early kickoffs produced 11 goals, two memorable victories and very different lessons about what it takes to win in Europe’s premier club competition.

At the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Paz scored after just two minutes, assisted Anastasios Douvikas shortly after halftime and struck again in the 57th minute before Jacobo Ramón completed Como’s rout. Joshua Zirkzee’s stoppage-time goal offered United little consolation. In Villeneuve-d’Ascq, Galatasaray had fallen behind to Soriba Diaoune’s first-half double despite scoring first through Yunus Akgün. Alexey Batrakov restored parity, a Nabil Bentaleb own goal put the Turkish champions back ahead, and Osimhen finished the job. Together, the results revealed how differently games can unfold even when the winners eventually look comfortable on the scoreboard.

What Changed Since the First Two Champions League Matchdays?

The results become more revealing when placed alongside each club’s earlier European performances.

Tuesday had already delivered its own extraordinary entertainment, including Paris Saint-Germain’s victory over Barcelona and Liverpool’s comeback against Villarreal. Those developments are examined in The Sports Encounter’s October 20 Champions League report. Wednesday’s early fixtures continued the high-scoring trend, with an added dose of pressure for one of England’s most recognizable clubs.

Como 4-1 Manchester United: Nico Paz Makes Carrick’s Problems Impossible to Ignore

Manchester United had barely settled into the contest when Nico Paz gave them another problem to solve.

In the second minute, the Argentine attacking midfielder found room inside the penalty area and curled his finish beyond Senne Lammens. Harry Maguire had allowed Paz space to turn and shoot, and Como punished the hesitation.

The opening goal mattered beyond its timing. United had arrived in Italy looking for a response to their 2-0 defeat against Atlético Madrid on October 13. Falling behind almost immediately forced Carrick’s side into another difficult recovery against opponents comfortable moving the ball through midfield.

Como, coached by Cesc Fàbregas, continued to stretch United’s defensive shape. Lucas da Cunha, Martin Baturina and the movement of Douvikas helped create passing options around a midfield that repeatedly struggled to track runners.

It was the kind of problem United supporters had already seen this season. Our earlier investigation into Manchester United’s recurring tactical and recruitment problems highlighted the instability behind their disappointing results.

Why United’s Halftime Changes Failed to Stop Como

Carrick introduced Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba at halftime, replacing Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos. It was an attempt to inject energy into United’s attacking play and midfield.

Within four minutes of the restart, however, Como doubled their lead.

Paz threaded a pass through for Douvikas, who escaped Matthijs de Ligt and finished past Lammens. The goal exposed another defensive weakness: United’s inability to control runners once their midfield line had been bypassed.

Eight minutes later, Baleba lost possession in a dangerous area. Paz recognized the opportunity immediately, drove toward goal and finished to make it 3-0.

The sequence was particularly damaging because a substitution designed to help stabilize United’s performance had instead become part of Como’s third goal. Baleba’s mistake was decisive in that moment, although the overall defensive failure extended well beyond any single player.

Jacobo Ramón headed in the fourth in the 76th minute following another flowing attacking sequence. Substitute Joshua Zirkzee finally scored for United in the 91st minute after controlling an Amad delivery, but the contest had long been settled.

Nico Paz’s Contribution Was Bigger Than His Two Goals

Paz finished with two goals and an assist, giving him direct involvement in three of Como’s four goals. That represents 75% of his team’s scoring on the night.

His first finish demonstrated his shooting quality. His pass for Douvikas showed how effectively he recognized space behind United’s defensive line. His second goal added anticipation and direct running after a midfield turnover.

These were three different kinds of contribution, all from the same player.

The supporting cast deserves recognition, too. Douvikas continually threatened the space behind United’s defense, da Cunha helped establish Como’s attacking rhythm, and Ramón turned another well-constructed move into a goal.

Ramón’s contribution also has a useful recent parallel. In September, the defender scored during Como’s 2-1 Serie A victory against Parma, demonstrating that his influence can extend beyond conventional defensive responsibilities.

Lille 2-4 Galatasaray: Victor Osimhen Finishes a Comeback Lille Could Not Contain

If Como’s victory was built on early authority, Galatasaray’s was shaped by their ability to recover from losing control of the scoreline.

Yunus Akgün gave the visitors an ideal start in the second minute, pouncing after Lille failed to clear a dangerous delivery into the penalty area.

Yet the opening goal did not establish lasting command.

Soriba Diaoune equalized in the seventh minute, finding space behind Galatasaray’s defense and beating goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır. The young Lille attacker then struck again in the 39th minute to put the French side 2-1 ahead.

At that stage, Lille appeared to have recovered from their early concession and placed Galatasaray under significant pressure.

But the visitors responded before halftime.

Alexey Batrakov equalized in the 44th minute, ensuring Galatasaray entered the interval level despite spending much of the first half reacting to Lille’s attacking threat.

How Galatasaray Turned a 2-1 Deficit Into a 4-2 Victory

The second half delivered another reversal.

In the 52nd minute, Lille midfielder Nabil Bentaleb was credited with an own goal as Galatasaray regained the lead following a dangerous set-piece sequence.

Nine minutes later, Osimhen struck to make it 4-2, giving Galatasaray the breathing room they had lacked throughout the first half.

The Nigerian striker’s goal provided the finish to a recovery that required contributions from several players. Akgün had supplied the early breakthrough, Batrakov answered Lille’s second goal, and Osimhen ensured the visitors did not surrender their regained advantage.

For Lille, Diaoune’s double deserved better protection. His movement and finishing had given the French side a genuine opportunity to claim valuable points, but three Galatasaray goals across the period surrounding halftime transformed the match.

The result was particularly significant because Galatasaray entered Wednesday without a Champions League victory this season.

They had lost 3-1 to Sporting CP in September and 4-1 at home to Barcelona in October. The Sports Encounter previously examined why Galatasaray’s possession advantage against Sporting failed to produce a victory.

The Lille match supplied a compelling reversal of that earlier statistical story.

The Numbers Reveal Two Different Ways to Win a Champions League Match

At first glance, the two victors shared a straightforward achievement: four goals apiece.

But their underlying performances were strikingly different.

Como controlled 54% possession against Manchester United, completed more passes and placed nine shots on target. Galatasaray, by contrast, had only 46% possession against Lille and attempted fewer shots than their opponents.

Yet both teams won by at least two goals.

Original TSE Analysis: Como’s Shooting Precision Stands Out

The most revealing comparison comes from the relationship between attempted shots, shots on target and goals.

Como placed nine of 12 attempts on target, an exceptional 75% shooting accuracy. Manchester United managed four from 13 attempts, approximately 30.8%.

Galatasaray’s numbers reveal something different. Only four of their 10 attempts were recorded as shots on target. Their four-goal total also included Bentaleb’s own goal, meaning a simple goals-to-shots calculation needs careful interpretation.

TeamShotsOn TargetShot AccuracyGoals / Shots*
Como12975.0%33.3%
Manchester United13430.8%7.7%
Lille15640.0%13.3%
Galatasaray10440.0%40.0%

TSE calculation: Shot accuracy = shots on target divided by total shots, multiplied by 100. Goals/shots = goals credited to the team divided by its total shots, multiplied by 100. *The goals/shots measure is descriptive, not a pure finishing-efficiency measure: Galatasaray’s total includes a Lille own goal. Figures are rounded to one decimal place.

Como’s 75% shot accuracy is the standout figure. It demonstrates how consistently Fàbregas’ players tested the goalkeeper despite attempting one fewer shot than United.

Galatasaray’s performance tells a different story. Their four goals came from relatively limited shooting volume, while Lille’s 15 attempts and six on-target efforts produced only two goals.

There is an important analytical limit here: these totals alone cannot determine expected goals, shot difficulty or the full tactical quality of either performance. They do, however, identify where the decisive scoreboard differences emerged.

What Changed Since the First Two Champions League Matchdays?

The results become more revealing when placed alongside each club’s earlier European performances.

Como opened their Champions League debut campaign with a 4-1 victory against RB Leipzig. That result introduced Fàbregas’ young side to a much wider audience, and TSE’s original report on Como’s historic European debut documented the significance of their first appearance.

Their momentum was checked when Feyenoord beat them 3-2 on October 14. The Sports Encounter’s Matchday 2 report on Feyenoord’s comeback against Como traced how the Dutch side recovered from an early deficit.

Seven days later, Como recovered with another four-goal performance, this time against Manchester United.

Galatasaray’s reversal was even more necessary. Their defeats to Sporting and Barcelona had left them with zero points after two matches.

Como have collected six points from three matches, scoring 10 goals in the process. Remarkably, they have now scored four goals against both Leipzig and Manchester United, two clubs with substantially longer histories at Europe’s highest level.

United’s position is more troubling. They began with a 4-0 victory over Sabah but have since conceded six goals across defeats to Atlético and Como without collecting another point.

Galatasaray have finally opened their account with three points, while Lille remain without a victory after three matches.

Michael Carrick Faces Questions That Go Beyond One Bad Night

For Manchester United, the most worrying aspect of the Como defeat was how familiar the problems looked.

Carrick’s side have struggled with defensive concentration, midfield protection and the transition from possession to defending. Their defeat in Italy exposed those issues against a team that repeatedly recognized and attacked available space.

United also faced difficult personnel circumstances. Matthijs de Ligt returned to the starting lineup after a lengthy absence caused by back problems. His return offered Carrick another senior defensive option, but he was unable to prevent Douvikas escaping for Como’s second goal.

United’s wider injury problems and Leny Yoro’s suspension had already limited Carrick’s choices. Those absences provide meaningful context without explaining away the repeated lapses in defensive organization.

De Ligt’s performance must also be judged in the context of his lengthy layoff. One difficult return against a sharp, mobile attack does not establish his longer-term level.

United have now gone seven matches without a victory across competitions, according to contemporary match reporting. A Champions League defeat of this magnitude inevitably intensifies scrutiny, but any decision about Carrick’s future remains the club’s responsibility rather than an established outcome.

Galatasaray’s Comeback Offers a More Encouraging Lesson

Galatasaray began the competition badly, but the Lille victory demonstrated a quality their earlier defeats had failed to produce: the capacity to respond decisively when their initial advantage disappeared.

Against Sporting, Galatasaray had held 59% possession yet lost 3-1. Against Lille, they held only 46% but won 4-2.

That comparison challenges any assumption that greater possession necessarily means a better performance.

Possession provides opportunities to influence the rhythm of a game. The quality of decisions made around the penalty area often determines whether that influence produces goals.

The return of Osimhen as a decisive attacking presence was significant in this context. His absence against Sporting had reduced Galatasaray’s options in the final third, and his goal against Lille supplied an emphatic contribution in a match that demanded sharper finishing.

The Turkish champions should nevertheless resist interpreting one victory as proof that their European problems have disappeared. Lille created more shots and twice exposed their defense through Diaoune. Better opponents may punish similar vulnerabilities more severely.

What Wednesday provided was an important foundation: three points, four goals and evidence that Okan Buruk’s side can recover under pressure.

What Happens Next for Como, Manchester United, Galatasaray and Lille?

Under UEFA’s 36-team league-phase format, every team plays eight matches. The top eight qualify directly for the round of 16, while clubs placed ninth through 24th enter the knockout-phase playoffs. Teams finishing 25th or lower are eliminated.

Those rules make the two results important, but three matches are far too early to declare any of these clubs qualified or eliminated.

The TSE analysis of the 2026-27 Champions League draw examines the difficulty of the remaining schedules and the importance of every league-phase point.

Champions League Matchday 4: The Next Tests

ClubNext OpponentDateWhy It Matters
Manchester UnitedRoma (Home)November 3Opportunity to end successive European defeats
GalatasarayStuttgart (Home)November 3Chance to build on the Lille comeback
ComoLens (Away)November 4Test of whether home dominance transfers to difficult away fixtures
LilleBodø/Glimt (Away)November 3Another opportunity to secure their first points

These fixtures are listed in UEFA’s official club-by-club Champions League schedule, with the official Lille-Galatasaray match page providing the competition reference for the French fixture.

United’s meeting with Roma may become especially important for Carrick. His team need a positive response after conceding four goals in Como, and another poor defensive performance would invite further questions about the direction of their rebuild.

Galatasaray can approach Stuttgart with renewed confidence, although their defensive vulnerabilities against Lille remain a concern.

Como’s trip to Lens will test the strength of their European ambitions away from the Stadio Sinigaglia. Their first two home games produced eight goals and two 4-1 victories. That attacking record is impressive, but European progress will also depend on collecting points in unfamiliar environments.

Lille, meanwhile, face mounting pressure to turn competitive periods into complete performances. Diaoune’s double against Galatasaray demonstrated their attacking potential. Conceding four goals at home exposed the other half of the challenge.

The Sports Encounter Analysis: Two Victories, One Warning for Europe’s Established Clubs

Como and Galatasaray reached their victories through different methods, but both results underline the importance of responding effectively to decisive moments.

Como exploited United’s positional errors with speed, precision and intelligent movement. Paz repeatedly recognized opportunities that United failed to close down, while Douvikas and Ramón made important supporting contributions.

Galatasaray survived a much more unstable match. They surrendered an early advantage, trailed late in the first half and required contributions from several attackers before Osimhen gave them the decisive two-goal cushion.

The familiar names and reputations carried little protection for Manchester United or Lille on Wednesday.

United’s next task is to establish whether their latest defeat was another isolated collapse or further evidence of structural weaknesses that will continue to undermine their season. Como must demonstrate that their remarkable home performances can be sustained across the broader European schedule.

Galatasaray have bought themselves valuable breathing room. Lille have made their qualification challenge significantly harder.

For all four clubs, the next matchday will provide a better measure of whether Wednesday marked a genuine turning point.
