Ariel Hukporti Tears Right Achilles: 76ers Lose Embiid’s Backup Before Season Even Begins

Ariel Hukporti’s Philadelphia opportunity lasted less than five preseason minutes before a ruptured right Achilles ended his season. For the 76ers, the injury removes critical insurance behind Joel Embiid and sends their center rotation into October already under pressure.

Ariel Hukporti of the Philadelphia 76ers after suffering a season-ending right Achilles rupture during the 2026 preseason opener against the New York Knicks.

PHILADELPHIA, United States, October 6, 2026: Ariel Hukporti spent years recovering from one ruptured Achilles, reached the NBA, became part of a championship team in New York and signed with Philadelphia believing a larger role was finally waiting for him.

His first 76ers preseason game lasted less than five minutes.

Hukporti ruptured his right Achilles tendon during Monday night’s 120-97 preseason victory over his former New York Knicks team and will miss the entire 2026-27 NBA season.

The 24-year-old center went down without contact while trying to recover toward Karl-Anthony Towns on the perimeter. He immediately reached toward the back of his right ankle and could not leave the floor under his own power. Towns and members of Philadelphia’s staff helped him off.

An MRI on Tuesday confirmed the rupture, turning what initially looked like a frightening preseason injury into a season-ending diagnosis before Philadelphia’s championship campaign has officially begun.

Hukporti was scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.

For a 76ers roster built around Joel Embiid, LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey, the injury will not dominate the headlines in the way losing one of those stars would.

It still attacks one of Philadelphia’s most important areas of insurance.

The Sports Encounter has spent much of the offseason examining whether Philadelphia’s extraordinary star construction can survive the health and depth questions surrounding it, from LeBron James changing the 76ers’ title equation to asking whether Philadelphia now owns the NBA’s most dangerous starting five.

Hukporti’s injury exposes the other side of that argument.

Championship teams need more than five names.

Hukporti started against New York because Philadelphia held several established players out of the preseason opener, including Embiid, James and Maxey.

With a little more than seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, Towns received the ball near the 3-point line. Hukporti had dropped toward the paint as Jalen Brunson moved around the action, then tried to accelerate back toward Towns when the Knicks center prepared to shoot.

Hukporti planted on his right foot.

His next movement never came.

He stopped immediately, looked behind him and reached toward his heel before going to the floor.

The Yahoo Sports report on Hukporti’s Achilles rupture confirmed that subsequent imaging ended his season.

Why This Injury Is Especially Cruel for Hukporti

For Philadelphia, this is a depth problem.

For Hukporti, it is painfully familiar territory.

He already knows what an Achilles rehabilitation demands.

During the 2022 NBL preseason in Australia, Hukporti suffered a ruptured Achilles while playing for Melbourne United. The injury wiped out his entire 2022-23 season.

Melbourne United later documented the difficult rehabilitation process, including Hukporti’s return to full-contact work roughly nine months after the injury.

The club’s account of Hukporti’s first Achilles recovery described a young player rebuilding both physically and mentally after losing a full season.

He eventually returned.

That comeback took him from Melbourne to the 2024 NBA Draft, where Dallas selected him with the 58th pick before trading his rights to New York.

Two years later, he owned an NBA championship ring and a new opportunity in Philadelphia.

Now another Achilles rupture has interrupted that trajectory.

Hukporti Had Finally Reached a Point Where Regular NBA Minutes Were Available

His raw NBA numbers do not explain why Philadelphia wanted him.

Hukporti averaged 2.1 points and 2.7 rebounds across 79 games during two seasons with New York, according to his official 76ers player profile.

He was never supposed to be a major scorer.

The value came from size, rebounding, rim protection and the possibility that a 7-foot, 246-pound center could absorb the physical work Philadelphia cannot reasonably ask Embiid to handle every night.

New York had Towns and Mitchell Robinson ahead of Hukporti in its center hierarchy during the championship season.

Philadelphia offered something different.

Minutes.

The 76ers signed him to a one-year, $3.4 million contract in July with the expectation that he could compete with Adem Bona for backup-center responsibilities.

He had moved from a championship roster where opportunities were limited to another contender where the need was obvious.

The opportunity disappeared before the regular season arrived.

Why Philadelphia Needed Hukporti Even With Joel Embiid Healthy

The most important word is not replacement.

It is protection.

Philadelphia did not sign Hukporti because it expected him to replace Embiid’s production.

No backup center on the roster can do that.

The purpose was to build enough functional depth that every Embiid absence did not force Nick Nurse to improvise.

TSE made that distinction when Philadelphia brought Tacko Fall into training camp alongside Hukporti, Bona and other frontcourt options. The issue was never finding another franchise center. It was creating enough different solutions behind one.

Embiid remains the foundation of Philadelphia’s interior offense and defense when available.

Availability is precisely why depth matters.

The 76ers have constructed a veteran-heavy title push around players whose workload will require management. TSE’s analysis of the NBA’s biggest offseason gambles identified Philadelphia’s ceiling as enormous while repeatedly returning to the same variable: can the stars stay healthy enough for the plan to survive?

Hukporti represented one small but important layer of protection against that uncertainty.

Adem Bona Now Becomes Much More Important

Philadelphia’s cleanest answer would normally be Bona.

The problem is that he has not been healthy either.

Bona has been dealing with a left foot sprain suffered while playing for Turkey during the offseason and missed the beginning of training camp.

The 76ers had hoped he would become available during the preseason.

Once healthy, Bona should move into the clearest backup-center role behind Embiid. He brings athleticism, vertical defense and more familiarity with Nurse’s system than some of Philadelphia’s other frontcourt options.

The problem is what happens until then, and what happens later if Embiid or Bona becomes unavailable.

Hukporti was supposed to make those questions less urgent.

His injury makes them immediate.

Could Tacko Fall Become Part of the Solution?

Fall’s presence naturally becomes more interesting after Hukporti’s injury.

The 7-foot-6 center entered camp on an Exhibit 10 contract, giving Philadelphia an extreme-size option without committing a standard roster spot before evaluating him.

TSE examined that experiment when the 76ers added Fall, Jameer Nelson Jr. and Saint Thomas.

Fall was never a like-for-like Hukporti replacement.

His strengths and limitations are completely different.

Hukporti offers more mobility in conventional NBA defensive actions. Fall changes the geometry around the rim simply because of his size, but opponents can force him into space and attack him through screening actions.

There is another complication.

Fall is currently dealing with a left hip strain.

That means Philadelphia’s center depth behind Embiid is not simply thin on paper. Several of the players expected to compete for those minutes have already dealt with health issues before opening night.

Philadelphia Can Play Smaller, but That Creates Different Problems

Nurse has alternatives.

Dominick Barlow can absorb center minutes.

Jabari Walker can play up a position in smaller units.

Dean Wade offers frontcourt shooting and lineup flexibility.

LeBron has played center in specific configurations throughout his career.

None of those options reproduces what a traditional 7-footer gives Philadelphia.

Small-ball lineups can create offensive advantages because they pull opposing centers away from the rim and put more skill on the floor. They can also become vulnerable on the defensive glass, against post size and when opponents repeatedly attack the paint.

That tradeoff matters more if Philadelphia is trying to manage Embiid’s workload rather than increase it.

The Sixers need lineups that allow their franchise center to rest without turning every non-Embiid minute into a survival exercise.

Why One Backup Center Matters to a Team With This Much Star Power

Philadelphia has built one of the most spectacular starting groups in basketball.

Maxey brings speed.

Jaylen Brown brings two-way wing strength.

LeBron brings playmaking, control and decades of postseason experience.

Embiid remains an MVP-level force when healthy.

VJ Edgecombe gives the roster another athletic dimension.

TSE’s breakdown of Philadelphia’s projected starting five concluded that the group may have as much top-end talent as any lineup in the league.

NBA seasons are rarely decided solely by the five names that appear on opening-night graphics.

The regular season stretches through injuries, back-to-backs, travel, foul trouble, matchup adjustments and workload management.

The best teams survive because the ninth or tenth player can absorb responsibility without the entire structure changing.

That was supposed to be part of Hukporti’s value.

The Injury Arrives Before One of the NBA’s Most Demanding Opening Stretches

Philadelphia’s schedule gives Nurse little time to settle the frontcourt.

The regular season begins October 20 at Madison Square Garden against the defending champion Knicks.

That matchup already carried extraordinary narrative weight because it will mark LeBron’s Philadelphia regular-season debut against Hukporti’s former team on the night New York begins its title defense.

TSE examined that collision in both its early look at LeBron’s 76ers debut and its full 2026-27 NBA schedule analysis.

The Sixers then face Cleveland, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indiana and New York again before October ends.

Several of those teams can create serious problems around the rim or on the glass.

Philadelphia wanted multiple center options before entering that stretch.

It now has fewer.

The Knicks Connection Makes the Injury Even More Difficult

There was another reason Monday’s scene felt unusually emotional.

Hukporti was playing against people who had been his teammates only months earlier.

He spent his first two NBA seasons in New York and was part of the Knicks team that ended the franchise’s 53-year championship drought in June.

The Sports Encounter covered that journey from the pressure of the Finals to New York closing out San Antonio in five games.

Towns helped Hukporti off the court after the injury.

Brunson checked on him afterward.

Knicks coach Mike Brown opened his postgame remarks by sending his best wishes.

The competitive relationship had changed.

The human one had not.

Philadelphia’s Championship Ambition Has Not Changed

Hukporti’s injury does not suddenly remove Philadelphia from the title conversation.

That would exaggerate his role.

The 76ers’ ceiling still depends overwhelmingly on Embiid, LeBron, Maxey, Brown and the rest of the primary rotation.

The broader league viewed Philadelphia as a serious contender after its aggressive offseason, even while questions remained about age, health and chemistry. TSE’s early look at the 2026-27 championship race illustrated how crowded the league’s top tier had already become before Philadelphia completed all of its summer moves.

What Hukporti’s injury changes is the margin for error.

If Embiid is healthy, Philadelphia can still field one of basketball’s strongest teams.

If Bona returns quickly, the center rotation becomes more manageable.

If those conditions do not hold, Nurse will be forced to spend more time searching for lineup answers than Philadelphia expected when camp began.

For Hukporti, the Story Is Now About Another Comeback

The basketball analysis matters.

It should not overwhelm what has happened to the player.

Hukporti had already experienced the months of rehabilitation, isolation and uncertainty that follow an Achilles rupture.

He went through it before reaching the NBA.

He returned strongly enough to get drafted.

He fought for minutes in New York.

He became an NBA champion.

He signed with Philadelphia because the next stage of his career appeared to offer more responsibility.

Then, less than five minutes into his first preseason appearance in a 76ers uniform, the season disappeared.

Nick Nurse had coached him for only a short time but had already formed an impression.

“He’s been a joy to coach,” Nurse said after the game.

Hukporti now begins the same kind of long recovery he once thought he had left behind.

What Should 76ers Fans Watch Next?

The first issue is Bona’s availability. If he returns during the remaining preseason schedule, Philadelphia can begin establishing him as Embiid’s primary conventional backup.

The second is Fall’s health and roster status. His hip injury currently prevents Philadelphia from getting a complete evaluation of what he might provide.

The third is how often Nurse experiments with Barlow, Walker or Wade at center. Those minutes will reveal whether the coaching staff views small-ball lineups as an emergency option or a genuine part of the rotation.

The fourth is Embiid’s workload.

Philadelphia built depth partly so it would not need to squeeze unnecessary October minutes out of its most important center.

Hukporti’s injury cannot be allowed to turn preseason adversity into regular-season overuse.

Hukporti’s Injury Tests the Part of Philadelphia’s Roster Nobody Put on the Poster

The 76ers spent the summer building a team designed to create enormous headlines.

LeBron in Philadelphia.

Embiid chasing the championship that has eluded him.

Maxey entering another stage of his prime.

Brown giving the roster another proven two-way star.

The question underneath all that star power was always whether Philadelphia had enough functional depth to carry the season between the biggest nights.

Ariel Hukporti was supposed to be part of that answer.

He will not play a regular-season minute in 2026-27.

The 76ers still have enough talent to chase a championship.

They simply have less protection against everything that can go wrong along the way.
