Dasun Shanaka produced the fastest century in CPL history, finishing unbeaten on 121 from 43 balls as the Patriots piled up 235 for four, the highest total of the tournament so far. Jeremiah Louis then tore through the Saint Lucia batting order with a maiden T20 five-wicket haul, taking 5 for 10 as the Kings were dismissed for 98 in only 13.5 overs.

The final margin was 137 runs, the largest victory by runs in St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ CPL history.

Those numbers are extraordinary, but the most important number for the Patriots may be +0.593.

Why Match 25 Became More Than a Dasun Shanaka Record Night

Shanaka will own the highlight reel, and understandably so. His century arrived from 39 deliveries, breaking a CPL benchmark of 40 balls that had been associated with Andre Russell, Tim Seifert and, most recently, Shimron Hetmyer.

Yet the Patriots’ victory was built through three distinct phases rather than one innings.

Andre Fletcher first survived a difficult opening period and punished Saint Lucia for failing to take their chances. Shanaka then turned a competitive total into something close to unreachable. Finally, Louis and the supporting St Kitts attack ensured Saint Lucia never had a serious opportunity to settle into the chase.

That distinction matters because the Patriots had spent much of CPL 2026 looking dependent on isolated moments. Their earlier victory over the Kings, when Andre Fletcher helped anchor the chase in Match 5, showed that their batting had enough experience to win controlled contests.

Andre Fletcher Made Saint Lucia Pay for Missed Chances

The final score makes the first half of the Patriots innings look easier than it was.

Kyle Mayers was removed cheaply by Matthew Forde, but Saint Lucia then gave Fletcher opportunities that proved far more costly. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter was put down twice during the seventh over, including one chance around the long-on boundary.

Fletcher did what good T20 batters are supposed to do after receiving a reprieve. He accelerated.

His fifty arrived from 23 balls, and he eventually made 64 from 38 with six fours and four sixes. That innings created the platform from which Shanaka could attack without needing to spend several overs repairing the score.

The Patriots were 59 for one after the Powerplay and reached 89 for two around the time Shanaka entered during the tenth over.

At that point, 185 to 195 looked plausible.

What followed pushed the innings into another category.

For the match report, the important point is where the acceleration began.

He immediately targeted Roston Chase, hitting consecutive sixes into the leg side, then continued attacking Matthew Forde and the rest of the Kings attack without allowing any bowler to establish a defensive length.

Shanaka reached fifty from 24 balls.

Even the wickets of Fletcher and captain Jason Holder failed to interrupt his rhythm. When Holder departed with St Kitts 142 for four after 14.5 overs, Saint Lucia still had a reasonable opportunity to keep the final total below 200.

Instead, the Patriots added 93 without losing another wicket.

The final five overs destroyed Saint Lucia’s bowling figures

St Kitts scored 93 runs from the final five overs.

The last four alone produced 79.

Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga added an unbeaten 93 from only 31 balls, although the partnership was overwhelmingly driven by Shanaka’s boundary hitting.

Maheesh Theekshana conceded 20 from one Shanaka assault. Keon Gaston then suffered through a 28-run final over in which Shanaka struck four sixes and a four.

Twenty boundaries from 43 balls

Eight fours contributed 32 runs.

Twelve sixes added another 72.

Shanaka therefore scored 104 of his 121 runs in boundaries, approximately 86 percent of his total.

His explanation at the innings break was revealing because he did not describe the performance as uncontrolled hitting. Shanaka said his ability to clear the boundary comes from repeatedly practising the fundamentals in the nets, learning to hit around the ground and then attacking when the ball enters his scoring areas.

That approach was visible throughout the innings. Saint Lucia could not simply protect one side of the field or commit to one defensive length.

235/4 Became the Highest CPL 2026 Total So Far

The Patriots’ 235 for four moved beyond every previous team score in this edition of the competition.

Its significance becomes even clearer when placed beside their previous completed home match.

Barbados had made 217 for four at Warner Park in Match 23 before St Kitts chased the target with five balls remaining. Johnson Charles led that pursuit with 78, Fletcher and Hasaranga supplied the finish, and the Patriots suddenly discovered the kind of batting confidence that had been absent during earlier defeats.

Two completed matches later, St Kitts had followed a 218-run chase by making 235 themselves.

That is a dramatic transformation for a side that was bowled out for 130 when Keemo Paul and Jamaica Kingsmen overwhelmed them in Match 10.

That means more than 85 percent of Shanaka’s entire innings came from balls that either reached or cleared the rope.

Lewis has been one of the most important power-hitters associated with the Patriots and has produced some of the franchise’s most memorable innings. Shanaka needed only 43 deliveries to move beyond his highest-score benchmark.

That gives the innings two distinct Patriots records: the highest individual score and the highest number of runs generated through boundaries.

The Six That Produced the Fastest Hundred in CPL History

The defining delivery came from Gaston.

Shanaka received a low full toss around the pads and used the line rather than trying to manufacture a complicated shot. He clipped it cleanly over square leg and into the crowd.

Warner Park erupted.

Hasaranga immediately ran toward Shanaka to celebrate as the batter absorbed the reaction from the home supporters.

Live commentary called it the fastest hundred in CPL history.

The achievement arrived only days after Shimron Hetmyer reached three figures in 40 balls against Trinbago Knight Riders, equalling the tournament benchmark that had previously been held by Andre Russell and Tim Seifert.

That makes the timing particularly remarkable. A CPL speed record that had just been matched has already been pushed further.

The Sports Encounter recently examined another major St Lucia batting performance when Tim Seifert’s unbeaten 105 helped the Kings beat TKR. Shanaka’s innings against the same St Lucia side operated at an entirely different tempo.

Shanaka: “This Innings Was Due for a Long Time”

Shanaka’s interview at the innings break added important context to what had just happened.

Asked what was going through his mind after the innings, he said he was pleased with the freedom he had shown at the crease.

“I’m really happy about the way I expressed myself in this game. This innings was due for a long time, and I’m glad it came today.”

That comment fits the shape of his tournament.

Shanaka had already produced several explosive cameos without converting one into a truly dominant innings. Against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, he hammered 49 not out from just 17 balls as St Kitts reached 187 for six. The Falcons eventually chased the target, but Shanaka’s finish had transformed the first innings. Why Shanaka Says the Sixes Begin With Basic Practice

The ease with which Shanaka cleared the ropes could make the innings look instinctive.

His explanation was more technical.

Asked how he hits sixes so regularly, Shanaka pointed toward repetition in training rather than simply trying to attack from his first delivery.

“I practice a lot of basics in the nets. It’s not like I’m trying to hit from ball one. I try to hit all around the ground.”

His central point was that power comes after control.

Shanaka said mastering the basics gives a batter the platform to execute attacking shots later, an approach that was visible in how widely he accessed the field against St Lucia.

His sixes did not come from one repeated swing into one section of the ground. Different lengths were redirected into different scoring areas.

That is what made the closing overs so difficult to defend.

Hasaranga Gave Shanaka the Freedom to Chase the Hundred

Hasaranga contributed only nine runs to their unbeaten 93-run partnership, but Shanaka made clear that his compatriot’s value went well beyond his own score.

He described having Hasaranga at the other end as “very special” and credited him with reinforcing the confidence required to keep attacking as the century approached.

“He was rooting for me from the other side, giving me the confidence to go for the hundred and at the same time push the score even further.”

That second part matters.

Individual landmarks can sometimes slow a T20 innings when a batter reaches the 90s. Shanaka continued attacking because the Patriots still needed to maximize the final overs.

The hundred and the team objective moved in the same direction.

The Niall O’Brien Challenge Adds a Human Detail

One of the more entertaining details from Shanaka’s interview involved commentator Niall O’Brien.

O’Brien had apparently challenged Shanaka to hit two sixes against Maheesh Theekshana.

Shanaka knew the Sri Lankan spinner well and acknowledged that Theekshana had generally bowled into the correct areas.

His adjustment was simple.

Rather than moving excessively at the crease during the closing deliveries, Shanaka stayed still and trusted his hitting base.

It was a small moment inside a record innings, but it also illustrated how relaxed Shanaka had become despite the scale of what he was producing.

Shanaka Calls It the Second-Best Innings of His Career

Asked whether this was the best innings he had ever played, Shanaka resisted the temptation to let the moment erase everything that came before it.

He identified an earlier performance against Australia as the innings that still sits above this one personally.

Beyond that, however, he rated the Warner Park assault as his second-best.

That is significant coming from a player who has spent more than a decade in international and franchise cricket.

A 121 not out, the fastest hundred in CPL history, a franchise high score and 12 sixes gave him plenty of evidence for that assessment.

Shanaka Thanks the Warner Park Crowd

The final part of his interview shifted toward the supporters.

St Kitts have endured an inconsistent tournament, yet the home crowd has continued backing a team that still has a realistic route into the playoff race.

Shanaka thanked the fans for staying behind the Patriots and made clear that the innings would mean more if the bowlers converted 235 into a victory.

“The home fans have been amazing and rooting for us all along. Thanks a lot for coming today, and hopefully, we win this game for them.”

That final sentence captured the only unfinished part of the story at the innings break.

The personal records were secure.

The match was not.

Patriots Have Gone From Batting Fragility to Extreme Firepower

The broader St Kitts story makes Shanaka’s innings even more interesting.

The Patriots began CPL 2026 with serious batting problems.

They made only 109 for nine against TKR in their opening game as Sunil Narine took 3 for 7. The Sports Encounter’s report on the Patriots’ opening defeat showed a side struggling to create enough scoring pressure.

The response against St Lucia in Match 5 was far better. Andre Fletcher anchored the chase as the Patriots defeated the Kings by five wickets, a result covered in our first Patriots vs St Lucia report of the season.

The inconsistency continued.

The September 5 meeting with Barbados is effectively a knockout match for Trinbago.

A victory would move TKR to six points and preserve the possibility of reaching eight against Guyana.

The matchup also offers an opportunity to improve their tiebreak position.

Barbados currently have an NRR of -0.784, significantly below TKR’s -0.167. Another substantial Trinbago victory could widen that gap while preventing Barbados from collecting two points.

TKR know that formula can work because they dismantled the Tridents earlier in the tournament. Sunil Narine took 2 for 14 and then scored 55 from 33 balls as Trinbago chased 128 in only 14.5 overs. That seven-wicket victory remains Trinbago’s most useful blueprint for what they now require: win first, win decisively if possible, and improve NRR at the same time.

Then TKR Have to Beat Unbeaten Guyana

Even victory in Barbados merely earns Trinbago the right to face the hardest part of the equation.

Guyana Amazon Warriors began their campaign with four victories from four and an extraordinary +2.604 NRR.

Their dominance has appeared in different forms.

Mohammad Nabi took four wickets when Guyana opened their campaign by dismantling Jamaica, a performance covered in our Guyana vs Jamaica Match 6 report.

Dwaine Pretorius and the Warriors later controlled St Lucia, before Shimron Hetmyer helped complete the chase. The Sports Encounter’s analysis of Guyana’s win over St Lucia showed how quickly their balance of bowling depth and middle-order power began separating them from the field.

They then destroyed Antigua by bowling the Falcons out for 116 and completing the chase with 61 balls remaining. That result, examined in our Guyana vs Antigua Match 15 report, was a major reason their NRR became so imposing.

Trinbago have already experienced that threat themselves.

Shimron Hetmyer smashed an unbeaten 111 from 43 deliveries when Guyana beat TKR by nine runs under the DLS method in their latest meeting. The official CPL report recorded Hetmyer’s 40-ball hundred, which equalled the competition record for the fastest century.

TKR must now reverse that result in Providence.

Eight Points Still Do Not Guarantee TKR a Playoff Place

This is the most important part of the qualification equation.

Suppose Trinbago beat Barbados and Guyana.

They reach eight points.

They are still not automatically through.

Antigua already have 11.

Guyana, St Lucia and Jamaica already have eight before completing their schedules.

For Trinbago to finish inside the top four, no more than three teams in the entire league can finish above eight points.

Antigua already occupy one of those positions.

That means, among Guyana, St Lucia, Jamaica, St Kitts and Barbados, no more than two can finish above eight.

Everyone else must finish on eight or fewer.

Why TKR Cannot Qualify on Points Alone

There is another mathematical complication.

Guyana, St Lucia and Jamaica already have eight points.

If all three move beyond eight, they join Antigua above Trinbago’s ceiling.

That creates four teams above TKR and eliminates them.

Therefore, for TKR to qualify, at least one of Guyana, St Lucia or Jamaica must finish on exactly eight points.

That guarantees an eight-point tie.

So even a perfect TKR finish cannot produce an outright qualification position based purely on points.

Net run rate must eventually decide their fate.

The Most Important TKR Qualification Rule

Which Results Do TKR Need From Other Teams?

There is no single fixed combination because several remaining matches involve the contenders playing each other.

The broader principle is easier to understand.

TKR need points to become concentrated among a small number of teams rather than spread evenly across the playoff race.

If two or three teams race toward 12, 14 or 16 points while Jamaica, Barbados, St Kitts or St Lucia remain around eight, that can help Trinbago.

If almost everybody keeps collecting wins and moves beyond eight, TKR are finished.

TKR need Jamaica to remain vulnerable

Jamaica have eight points from eight matches and only two league fixtures remaining.

They face Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents.

Two defeats leave Jamaica on eight.

That would create precisely the kind of tie TKR need.

Jamaica’s turnaround has already damaged Trinbago directly. The Kingsmen beat TKR by seven runs under DLS during Trinbago’s home leg, one of three consecutive defeats that transformed this playoff equation.

TKR would benefit if St Lucia stall on eight

St Lucia also entered Match 25 with eight points.

If the Kings fail to add another point, they remain within TKR’s theoretical reach through NRR.

The irony is that St Lucia have already inflicted one of Trinbago’s most damaging defeats of the season.

At publication, St Lucia’s return meeting with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots was underway. A Patriots victory would be more useful to Trinbago because it would leave St Lucia on eight rather than moving them to 10.

St Kitts cannot be allowed to climb too far

The Patriots entered Match 25 on five points.

They can still finish above eight, so TKR also need to watch their results.

St Kitts revived their season spectacularly by chasing 218 against Barbados. Johnson Charles made 78 and Wanindu Hasaranga finished the chase with an extraordinary cameo. The Sports Encounter’s Match 23 analysis of the Patriots’ record chase showed why they cannot be dismissed from the qualification equation.

From TKR’s perspective, St Kitts finishing on nine or more would remove another available top-four route.

Barbados must be contained

Barbados have the same four points as TKR but considerably more cricket remaining.

That makes them dangerous.

Trinbago’s first job is to beat them directly.

After that, Barbados can still reach double figures through their remaining games against St Lucia, St Kitts, Jamaica and Guyana.

If TKR reach eight, they would prefer Barbados to finish on eight or below.

Trinbago’s latest NRR after Match 24 is approximately -0.167.

That is not a strong number, but it is recoverable over two matches.

Jamaica may be TKR’s most realistic NRR target

Jamaica’s +0.052 is only 0.219 above Trinbago’s -0.167.

If Jamaica lose both remaining matches while TKR win twice, that gap could reverse naturally.

Trinbago would not merely gain NRR through victories. Jamaica would lose NRR through defeats.

That is why the Jamaica route deserves particular attention.

St Lucia could also come back toward TKR

St Lucia’s +0.081 provides only a modest current advantage.

For the Kings to remain on eight, however, they would need to lose their remaining matches.

Those defeats would probably reduce their NRR, potentially bringing TKR into range.

A Guyana tie would be much more difficult

Guyana’s +2.604 NRR is enormous.

If the Warriors somehow finished on eight, it would mean losing all their remaining matches, including the game against TKR. Those defeats would reduce their NRR substantially.

Even so, Trinbago should not build their qualification hopes around overtaking Guyana on the tiebreaker.

The far more realistic route is for Guyana to continue winning enough matches to move safely above eight while denying points to Jamaica, St Kitts, St Lucia or Barbados.

Why Big Wins Matter More Than Ever for TKR

At this stage of a tournament, winning by one run and winning by 50 runs deliver the same two league points.

They do not produce the same NRR consequence.

TKR therefore have two objectives against Barbados and Guyana:

1. Win.
2. If the match situation allows it, win with enough margin to strengthen their NRR.

A successful chase completed with several overs remaining can help. Defending a total by a substantial run margin can help.

Trinbago experienced the positive side of that equation against Barbados when their seven-wicket win was completed with 31 balls remaining.

They have also experienced how quickly tournament momentum can move in the opposite direction.

Shadab Khan’s unbeaten 52 from 20 balls helped Antigua beat TKR earlier in the season despite Trinbago having controlled significant parts of the match. Our Shadab Khan Match 14 analysis showed how damaging that missed opportunity became.

The second defeat to Antigua has now reduced the margin for error to zero.

The official CPL report on the latest Falcons victory described Trinbago as having potentially played themselves out of playoff contention after Hasan Nawaz, Rahkeem Cornwall and Joshua James helped Antigua win by eight runs.

“Potentially” is the important word.

They are not eliminated yet.

How TKR Reached This Position

The season began with a very different outlook.

Sunil Narine took 3 for 7 against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots as the defending champions opened with a rain-affected victory. The Sports Encounter’s report on TKR’s opening CPL 2026 win showed a bowling attack that appeared capable of controlling another title defense.
