TORONTO, Canada, October 21, 2026: Kawhi Leonard’s return to Toronto could have been framed entirely around nostalgia. The Raptors turned it into something much more forceful: a 135-92 demolition of the Chicago Bulls that suggested this reunion is about competing now, not merely revisiting 2019.
Leonard scored 23 points, Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley also had 23 each, and Toronto never trailed. RJ Barrett added 20 as the Raptors overwhelmed Chicago with pressure, transition opportunities and a first quarter that effectively set the tone for the night.
Toronto’s defense broke the game open
The most striking number was not Leonard’s scoring total. Chicago committed 27 turnovers, and Toronto converted them into 35 points. The Raptors recorded 15 steals, repeatedly turning defensive pressure into easy offense.
Toronto scored 43 points in the first quarter. Chicago had only 44 points at halftime.
That contrast explains why the game became a rout so quickly. The Bulls were not simply missing shots. They were giving Toronto additional possessions and allowing the Raptors to attack before Chicago’s defense could get organized.
Kawhi Leonard’s return had substance behind the emotion
Leonard finished with 23 points and four steals. His shooting was uneven at 5-for-17 from the floor, but he went 11-for-11 at the free-throw line and remained a disruptive defensive presence.
That matters because Toronto does not need Leonard to recreate every detail of his 2019 playoff run. The Raptors need him to give Barnes, Quickley and Barrett another high-level two-way option. On opening night, Toronto showed that the surrounding roster can carry substantial offensive responsibility.
Barnes and Quickley matching Leonard’s 23 points was particularly significant. Barrett’s 20 made it four Raptors with at least 20 points, which is exactly the type of distribution that can prevent opponents from loading up on one creator.
Chicago’s three-point collapse made the turnover problem worse
The Bulls shot just 4-for-36 from three-point range. Norman Powell was the only Chicago player to make more than one three.
Matas Buzelis led Chicago with 17 points, rookie Caleb Wilson scored 16, and Powell and Jalen Smith added 15 each. But Wilson also committed nine turnovers in his NBA debut, and Josh Giddey was held to two points on 1-for-10 shooting.
Chicago entered the season openly rebuilding. One game does not define that process, but a 43-point loss immediately exposes the areas that cannot become habits: careless possession management, poor perimeter shooting and an inability to slow a team once transition offense begins snowballing.

The first real message from Toronto
The Raptors’ biggest takeaway is that Leonard did not have to dominate the ball for Toronto to dominate the game. The team created offense from multiple sources while its defense generated extra possessions.
Chicago’s task is almost the opposite. The Bulls need cleaner half-court execution and a much more stable perimeter offense before they can judge how quickly the rebuild is progressing.
The Bulls travel to Milwaukee next, while Toronto heads to Washington. TSE’s NBA section will follow both teams throughout opening week. Readers can also use the NBA Hub, our offseason roster analysis, and the 2026-27 schedule guide for season-wide context.
