Then there is Schalke.

Back in the Bundesliga after three seasons away, the Royal Blues responded to an opening 3-0 defeat at Augsburg by becoming the first team to stop Bayern scoring in a league match for 59 games. Loris Karius produced the performance Schalke needed, and the defending champions left Gelsenkirchen with a 0-0 draw rather than another routine victory.

Sunday pushed the table into even stranger territory. Mainz destroyed Hamburg 5-0 before Augsburg recovered from an early deficit to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 and move top on goal difference.

Dortmund suddenly had momentum.

The winner arrived in the 86th minute when Ethan Nwaneri combined with Silva before his low cross was diverted into the net by Albian Hajdari.

From 2-0 down to 3-2 ahead in 25 minutes.

Dortmund’s six points conceal two different stories

Niko Kovač can be pleased with the table.

Dortmund have won both matches, scored five goals and sit third only because Augsburg and Freiburg have superior goal differences.

The performance in Hoffenheim was less comfortable.

Dortmund spent an hour being outplayed before individual quality and Hoffenheim’s inability to protect their lead changed everything.

Leverkusen’s summer rebuild needs performances like this

The most encouraging detail may have been how many newer pieces contributed.

Gutiérrez created two goals. Fernández and Medina scored. Maza controlled attacking spaces and added the fourth.

Leverkusen still have to show that this rebuilt side can reproduce such control against stronger opponents, but the structure looked considerably healthier than it did at Elversberg.
