George Ilenikhena needed 22 minutes in Jeddah to change the shape of the Saudi Pro League title race.

The 20-year-old striker scored twice as Al Ittihad beat defending champions Al Nassr 2-1 at Alinma Stadium on Saturday, September 5, ending the visitors’ perfect start and leaving Al Hilal alone at the top after five rounds.

Al Hilal had already done their part a day earlier. Sergej Milinković-Savić and Rúben Neves scored in a 2-0 victory at Al Shabab, extending Simone Inzaghi’s side to five wins from five and 15 points.

Al Nassr’s first defeat leaves them three points behind the leaders on 12, level with Al Qadsiah. Al Ittihad moved to 11 points and remain the only other unbeaten side in the top four, while Al Ahli, Al Kholood, NEOM and Al Ettifaq form a congested group on nine.

The final Matchweek 5 picture is considerably different from the one that existed after Friday. Saturday added the result that turned pressure into a clear early advantage for Al Hilal.

This remains an early title race. Five matches cannot settle a 34-round season. They can, however, reveal which teams are already capable of punishing mistakes, surviving difficult nights and making every dropped point feel expensive.

Al Ittihad 2-1 Al Nassr: George Ilenikhena Changes the Title Picture

Al Nassr had spent the opening month finding ways to win whenever matches became uncomfortable.

That resilience had been particularly obvious when they recovered from two goals down with 10 men to beat Al Ettifaq 3-2, a comeback we examined in our Al Ettifaq-Al Nassr analysis. They then fell behind against Al Taawoun and recovered again, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory that extended their perfect league start.

Al Ittihad gave the champions another deficit to solve. This one proved too large.

Ilenikhena struck after only four minutes and scored again in the 22nd, with Houssem Aouar supplying the second. Ângelo pulled one back for Al Nassr in the 36th minute, giving the visitors more than half a match to find an equalizer.

They never found it.

The Saudi Pro League’s official match report confirmed that Al Nassr’s defeat was their first of the season and left them three points behind Al Hilal.

Ilenikhena is becoming more than a promising option

Ilenikhena’s emergence deserves attention beyond this one result.

He also scored when Al Ittihad defeated Al Qadsiah earlier in the season. That match forced Al Ittihad to defend with 10 men for much of the second half, yet Ilenikhena’s goal survived as the difference. He has now started two of Al Ittihad’s most demanding league matches and scored all three of their goals across those victories.

That changes his status inside the squad.

Saudi clubs have spent heavily on experienced international attackers, but title races often create space for younger players who become indispensable before anyone expected them to. Ilenikhena is beginning to fit that description.

Al Nassr’s defeat is a warning, not a crisis

Four victories followed by one narrow away defeat to Al Ittihad does not erase what Ange Postecoglou’s team produced during the first four rounds.

The champions remain second. They have 12 points, have scored 13 goals and are only three behind Al Hilal.

The value of the result lies elsewhere.

Until Saturday, Al Nassr had repeatedly escaped difficult situations. Against Al Ittihad, their slow start finally created a problem they could not repair.

Al Hilal did not need Saturday’s result in Jeddah to validate their own start. It simply made their work against Al Shabab more valuable.

After a goalless first half, Sergej Milinković-Savić broke through in the 53rd minute before Rúben Neves converted a late penalty to complete a 2-0 victory.

Gabriel Martinelli also made his Saudi Pro League debut after joining the club from Arsenal.

The victory gave Al Hilal 15 points from a possible 15 and extended their extraordinary unbeaten league sequence to 47 matches. The Saudi Pro League says that run contains 35 victories and 12 draws.

Al Hilal are now approaching Al Ahli’s historic 51-game unbeaten league sequence. That record belongs to a different era, but the comparison illustrates how consistently Inzaghi’s team are collecting points.

Al Hilal are creating pressure before rivals even play

The strongest teams often influence a title race twice.

They collect their own points, then make everyone else feel the consequence of dropping theirs.

Al Hilal are beginning to do that.

They beat Al Ahli 3-0 in their previous league assignment and followed it with another clean sheet against Al Shabab. Five goals scored and none conceded across those two fixtures represent a particularly strong response to a demanding section of the schedule.

By the time Al Nassr entered Alinma Stadium on Saturday, the champions already knew Al Hilal had moved to 15.

After their defeat, that number became a three-point gap.

Al Qadsiah Are Making the Top Three Harder to Dismiss

Al Qadsiah’s 2-0 victory at Diriyah arrived before the biggest matches of the round, which makes it easy to overlook.

It should not be.

Four wins from five matches have taken Brendan Rodgers’ side to 12 points, level with defending champions Al Nassr.

Al Qadsiah have also shown that their early defeat against Al Ittihad did not destabilize them. They followed that setback with increasingly controlled performances, including the 2-0 victory over NEOM in which Tijjani Reijnders scored on his first league start.

The combination of Retegui, Quiñones and Reijnders gives Rodgers multiple ways to solve matches. The larger question is whether that quality can survive the full season once fixture congestion, injuries and pressure begin to accumulate.

For now, calling Al Qadsiah outsiders understates what the table is showing.

Al Ahli 5-0 Al Riyadh: The Biggest Response of Matchweek 5

Al Ahli entered Friday carrying consecutive league defeats and left with the biggest win of the round.

Ivan Toney converted penalties in the 16th and 61st minutes, while Eduard Spertsyan, Trincão and Naif Masoud completed a 5-0 victory over Al Riyadh.

Toney’s brace took him to six league goals, according to the Saudi Pro League’s official Matchweek 5 report.

The score matters, but the timing matters more.

Al Ahli had lost 3-1 to Al Kholood and then 3-0 to Al Hilal. A third consecutive defeat would have turned an uneven opening month into a genuine early-season problem.

Instead, the Jeddah club moved onto nine points and repaired some of the damage to both confidence and goal difference.

Al Ahli remain close enough to recover quickly

Fifth place after five matches is not where a squad with Al Ahli’s resources expects to settle.

Neither is it a serious deficit.

They sit six points behind Al Hilal but only three behind Al Nassr and Al Qadsiah. The next stretch will reveal whether the 5-0 victory represented a genuine correction or simply one dominant evening against an Al Riyadh side that has already conceded 16 goals.

That distinction matters because Al Ahli also carry continental expectations. The club enters another Asian campaign after consecutive continental titles, and domestic consistency will become harder to maintain once the calendar thickens.

NEOM 3-0 Al Khaleej: Eight Minutes Restored the Mood

NEOM were another team that badly needed a response.

Al Fayha 2-2 Al Kholood: Another Escape Protects an Unbeaten Record

Al Kholood have not generated the same international attention as the league’s richest clubs, but five rounds have produced something only Al Hilal and Al Ittihad can currently match: no defeats.

That record came close to disappearing at Al Fayha.

Hugo Moura gave the hosts an early lead before Iker Kortajarena equalized. Fashion Sakala restored Al Fayha’s advantage in the 57th minute, only for Julien Domingues to score in the 89th and secure a 2-2 draw.

Al Ettifaq Win Ugly While Abha Sink Deeper

Not every useful victory looks impressive.

Al Ettifaq left Abha with three points after goalkeeper Donovan Léon put the ball into his own net in the 80th minute.

The 1-0 result moves Al Ettifaq to nine points and leaves Abha bottom with one.

For Al Ettifaq, the result matters because the opening month has already contained extremes. They were 2-0 ahead against Al Nassr before losing 3-2, then suffered another defeat before responding in Abha.

Winning without attacking fluency provides points while the coaching staff works on the larger problems.

Abha have less room for patience. One point from five games, four defeats and 11 goals conceded have already created separation between them and the middle of the table.

Two Goalless Draws Reveal a Growing Bottom-Half Problem

Saturday’s other two matches contained no goals.

Al Faisaly and Al Hazem finished 0-0, leaving Al Faisaly on two points and still searching for their first victory.

Al Taawoun and Al Fateh also drew 0-0. Al Taawoun played the final portion with 10 men following Younes Al-Bahrawi’s 66th-minute red card, but Al Fateh could not turn the numerical advantage into a winning goal.

Five matches into the season, Al Taawoun, Al Shabab, Al Fateh and Al Khaleej all have three points without a victory. Al Faisaly have two, while Abha sit bottom on one.

The sample remains small, but the consequences of slow starts become harsher when several clubs above them are already collecting points consistently.

Five victories from five matches provide the obvious answer.

Beating the defending champions gives Al Ittihad more than three points.

They are unbeaten, only four points off first place and have now defeated both Al Qadsiah and Al Nassr. Those are exactly the results that strengthen a championship argument.

Al Qadsiah

The table is beginning to remove the need for qualifiers around their challenge.

They have won four of five matches. Their only defeat came by one goal against Al Ittihad. With 12 points and a +7 goal difference, the early evidence places them alongside the established contenders.

Al Ahli needed evidence that their attacking structure could still overwhelm an opponent. They received it.

Al Hilal host NEOM at Kingdom Arena on Monday, September 7, giving the leaders an immediate opportunity to extend their perfect record.

Al Ittihad return to Alinma Stadium against Al Fayha on September 8, while Al Qadsiah host Al Ahli on the same day in a match that could directly reshape the group behind the leaders.

Al Nassr then face bottom club Abha at Al-Awwal Park on September 9.

Those fixtures create very different pressures.

Al Hilal must protect a perfect start. Al Ittihad need to prove the Al Nassr victory can become sustained momentum. Al Qadsiah and Al Ahli will take points directly from one another. Al Nassr have an immediate opportunity to show that one defeat has not disturbed the defending champions.

Al Nassr remain close enough for one round to erase the three-point deficit, but the defeat in Jeddah removed the aura of inevitability that had begun forming around their comeback-heavy start.
