Kandy Royals had scored 100 runs inside eight overs and turned the largest chase of their Lanka Premier League season into a genuine contest.

The target was still 122 runs away, but Pawan Sandesh was striking the ball cleanly, the required rate remained manageable, and Jaffna Kings were searching for a way to slow the match down.

Their answer came through spin.

Shakib Al Hasan removed Kusal Perera immediately after Kandy reached 100, Zahoor Khan ended Sandesh’s assault, and Dunith Wellalage later claimed three wickets in eight deliveries. Jaffna’s Openers Attack Before the Middle Order Stalls

Jaffna built their innings around one of the most aggressive powerplays of the tournament.

Kamil Mishara and Avishka Fernando added 95 for the first wicket, taking advantage of loose new-ball bowling and an expensive fielding performance from Kandy. Jaffna reached 50 after four overs and closed the powerplay on 79 without loss.

Fernando contributed 36 from 22 balls, while Mishara struck five sixes during his 49 from 26. Their intent forced Wanindu Hasaranga to introduce spin after the opening partnership had already placed Kandy under pressure.

Moeen Ali broke the stand when Fernando found Dale Phillips, and Mishara followed seven balls later. Those wickets changed the tempo of the innings.

Ibrahim Zadran made eight, captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa struggled to seven from 10 deliveries, and Towhid Hridoy fell for 21. Jaffna declined from 95 without loss to 139 for five.

Kandy Turn an Enormous Chase Into a Real Contest

Jaffna’s second victory over Kandy in five days confirmed their rise after an uneven opening half of the tournament.
