LPL 2026: Jaffna Kings Beat Colombo Kaps by 5 Runs Despite Sahan’s Late Assault

Chamindu Wickramasinghe’s fearless 43 and a disciplined bowling performance helped Jaffna Kings survive a remarkable late counterattack from Wanuja Sahan and defeat Colombo Kaps by five runs in Match 7 of the Lanka Premier League 2026.

Jaffna appeared to have the contest under complete control after reducing Colombo to 147 for nine in the 19th over at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. Sahan, however, refused to allow the chase to fade quietly.

The lower-order batter struck an unbeaten 34 from 15 balls and launched the final delivery for six, but Colombo finished on 174 for nine while chasing 180. Jaffna’s narrow victory lifted them to second place in the Lanka Premier League 2026 standings, level with unbeaten leaders Galle Gallants on four points.

Jaffna Build Their Innings Around Three Productive Partnerships

Colombo captain Kamindu Mendis chose to bowl first on a fresh Dambulla surface, but Jaffna’s openers handled the early movement with patience.

Avishka Fernando and Kamil Mishara added 65 for the first wicket, giving the Kings their most stable batting platform of the tournament so far. Mishara struck seven fours in his 39 from 30 balls, while Avishka made 34 from 28 deliveries.

The pair did not dominate every over, but they kept wickets intact and allowed Jaffna’s middle order to attack later. The Kings reached 44 without loss after the six-over powerplay and completed their 50-run partnership from 43 balls.

Wanuja Sahan finally broke the stand when he trapped Mishara lbw in the ninth over. Milan Rathnayaka then removed Avishka at 84 for two, creating an opening for Colombo to slow the innings.

Chamindu Wickramasinghe quickly closed it.

Chamindu Wickramasinghe Changes the Tempo

Wickramasinghe produced the innings that separated the teams, scoring 43 from only 22 balls at a strike rate of 195.45.

His arrival gave Jaffna the acceleration that had been missing during the opening partnership. Wickramasinghe struck four fours and two sixes, attacking pace and spin while maintaining the scoring rate through the middle and death overs.

Ibrahim Zadran contributed 19 from 17 balls before Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed him. Two deliveries later, Mujeeb bowled Bhanuka Rajapaksa for a duck, leaving Jaffna at 127 for four in the 16th over.

The double strike threatened to disrupt the innings. Wickramasinghe responded by continuing to attack rather than retreating into consolidation.

He shared a useful partnership with Dunith Wellalage, who scored 19 from 13 balls, including a four and a six. Their work carried Jaffna beyond 150 before Shahnawaz Dahani removed both batters during an impressive final spell.

Wickramasinghe eventually fell for 43 in the 19th over, but Shakib Al Hasan’s unbeaten 10 from five deliveries helped the Kings close on 179 for six.

Dahani was Colombo’s most controlled bowler, taking two for 25 from four overs. Mujeeb also claimed two wickets, while Sahan conceded only 10 runs and took one wicket from his two overs.

Colombo’s Five Changes Fail to Produce Early Stability

Colombo entered the match after making five changes to the side that had beaten Kandy Royals through Janith Liyanage and James Neesham’s unbeaten rescue partnership.

The altered batting order never settled.

Traveen Mathew shattered Rubin Hermann’s stumps in the second over. Dilshan Madushanka trapped Thanuka Dabare lbw shortly afterward, and Lizaad Williams removed Sadeera Samarawickrama for four.

Colombo ended the powerplay on 37 for three, already requiring a substantial rebuilding effort. Shakib made the situation worse when he dismissed impact substitute Ben McDermott for five immediately after the fielding restrictions ended.

At 52 for four after 8.1 overs, Colombo needed Kamindu Mendis to play an almost flawless captain’s innings.

Kamindu Mendis Keeps Colombo Alive

Kamindu gave the Kaps their only sustained period of control in the chase.

He rotated the strike intelligently, punished width and reached his half-century from 34 balls. His 58 from 42 deliveries contained three fours and two sixes and allowed Colombo to recover from their disastrous start.

Sharujan Shanmuganathan supported him with a lively 26 from 17 balls. Their partnership brought Colombo to 98 for four after 13 overs, placing the chase within reach despite the early damage.

Mathew then delivered the match’s most important breakthrough.

Kamindu attempted to clear deep cover but found Wickramasinghe on the boundary. His dismissal at 100 for five removed Colombo’s set batter and exposed a middle and lower order that had little time to assess the conditions.

Wanuja Sahan Creates an Unexpected Final-Over Contest

Sahan’s late hitting turned what appeared to be a comfortable Jaffna victory into one of the most dramatic finishes of the early tournament.

He struck six fours and one six in his unbeaten 34, scoring at 226.66. Rathnayaka also contributed 15 from eight balls as Colombo attacked a Jaffna bowling unit that briefly lost its control at the death.

Zahoor Khan entered the final over with 21 runs to defend. Sahan continued to find the boundary and completed the match by launching a low full toss over long-off for six.

The final blow reduced the margin to five runs but arrived too late to change the result.

Sahan’s innings also exposed an area Jaffna will need to address. Zahoor conceded 39 runs from three overs, while Wellalage went for 33 from three. The Kings’ early bowling discipline created enough protection, but better opponents may punish similar death-over execution.

Williams and Mathew Reward Rajapaksa’s Bowling Plans

Lizaad Williams finished with three for 29 and was the most successful bowler, but Mathew’s contribution carried equal tactical value.

Mathew conceded only 21 runs from four overs, bowled 14 dot balls and removed Hermann and Kamindu. The second wicket ended Colombo’s opening phase before it had begun, while the dismissal of Kamindu broke the partnership that had revived the chase.

Madushanka claimed two for 12 from three overs and delivered 11 dot balls. His economy rate of four runs per over was the best among the frontline bowlers.

The Kings also took every meaningful chance in the field, a sharp contrast with the mistakes that had previously hurt several teams during the opening week. Colombo’s earlier win over Kandy had been shaped by dropped catches, no-balls and a 25-run over. This time, the Kaps were the team unable to match their opponent’s fielding standards.

Why Wickramasinghe Deserved Player of the Match

Wickramasinghe’s 43 was the highest-impact batting performance in Jaffna’s innings.

He entered after a measured opening stand and immediately lifted the tempo. His 22-ball contribution accounted for nearly a quarter of Jaffna’s total while using fewer than one-fifth of the deliveries.

The innings also came during a period when wickets were falling around him. Jaffna lost Ibrahim Zadran and Rajapaksa in the same Mujeeb over, yet Wickramasinghe kept the score moving and ensured Colombo never fully controlled the middle phase.

His catch at deep cover to dismiss Kamindu added another decisive contribution. The Colombo captain was the one batter capable of completing the chase, making Wickramasinghe’s fielding intervention almost as important as several of his boundaries.

Jaffna’s Recovery Continues After Opening Defeat

Jaffna have now won two consecutive matches after beginning their campaign with a 36-run defeat against Galle Gallants.

Their first victory came when Rajapaksa’s unbeaten 61 rescued them against Dambulla Sixers. Match 7 required a different route. Jaffna established an opening partnership, accelerated through Wickramasinghe and then defended the total through new-ball wickets and excellent catching.

Rajapaksa acknowledged that the team still had room to improve despite the win.

“When you start winning, it becomes a habit. Hopefully, we’ve got a couple more games to play in Dambulla, and we can keep the same momentum going forward,” Rajapaksa said.

He also identified fielding as an area that can always improve and admitted Jaffna had started slowly with the bat while assessing a new surface.

The captain’s assessment reflected the balance of the performance. Jaffna were more organized than Colombo for most of the contest, but their late bowling left the match open until the final delivery.

What the Result Means for Both Teams

Jaffna’s second consecutive victory places them level with Galle on four points, although the Gallants retain first place through their significantly stronger net run rate. Galle began the season by beating Jaffna before strengthening their position with a successful chase against Colombo Kaps.
